Freestyle To TL or not to TL...

So finally, after a few years of buying upgrades, I have gotten my boat about where I have always wanted her. I am doing flatwater flips with ease, and while my boat is capable of flat spins, my body is still figuring it out.

99% of my riding is chasing boats on a 4 mile stretch of river and flatwater tricks in between good boats. This is my current setup

-8.5 Carbon Superfreak Badass w/ Kavinci Pole/Steering
ET967 w/ HPE 5Mil Stroker Kit
Full Spec 48 Carbs w/ vf3 reeds
Power Factor Pipe ran Dry
148 h20 Setback Mag pump w/ 9/15 prop & Xscream Trim
MSD Enhancer w/ Kawi Coils


I have some money in my toy budget saved up and really the only thing I am missing on my ski at this point is Total Loss (can't install a bigger pump on this hull). My question is, is it worth the $1k-2k?

Is it going to add that much height to my flips? If i don't buy TL i'm most likely gonna buy a Mavic drone or a suppressor...but if TL really makes that big of a difference for the money then Ill pull the trigger.

Pretty happy with prop, I am far from an expert on prop tuning, so most likely could get more out of it with an expert tuning. But its in the ballpark.

I was going to say get the TL because the other options you have I would have very little interest in lol. However if your tuning is off then I am not sure how much you will notice. Although I doubt I will ever run a JSTL I know there are a few people running those. Find someone with a good running boat, buy all the same parts that they have, and hope you can fine tune it from there. But like DAG said, a well tuned boat on stock charging will be better than switching to TL with moderate tuning.

TL i super nice. Might not add height to your flips. but deff makes more power and much more grunt down low.
Your impeller pitch sounds pretty low to me though. also you deffenlty gotta rep itch if adding a TL system.
Are you sure you cannot adapt a 155 pump to that freak?
i mean some guys did it to the first Rickter XFS.
I would go OEM 155 pump ANY day over ANY 148mm pump setup

And yes, like stated above, its all about the package. a good tuned boat is better than a boat with all the best parts, with "no tune"

I am pretty remote area wise, no reputable tuners anywhere close to me. As for the Pump, TEM said cutting up the hull to fit a 155 would not be a good idea due to how he designed the bottom deck etc. These TEM superfreaks are unicorns, wouldn't want to butcher one, especially after he said explicitly not to.

TL. 148 pump is all you get in that hull and I ran a tpe1105 in one just fine.

Currently running ATP TS2 TL and I love the instant power. I doubt I will ever have a primary ski without TL in the future. Charge the battery after every other ride and you're good to go. Haven't had any issues and I got my curves from ATP directly

I'm curious where this statement originated? Does anybody know who it was that tried it and determined a 155 in a freak was a waste of time? Or, was there some type of flow calculation that was run to come up with the conclusion?

Genuinely curious. Not looking to cause any type of arguments over it.

Someone asked TEM years ago when he was still making these, and the answer from the guy who developed and built the actual ski's was what McDog said above.

Yes. He tried and it was a no go and he decided not to remake the badass molds because he was focusing on the circus hull.

If you decide to go TL, The new CPI TL system is done and working great, they competed with it all last year including WF and just this past weekend at the lake Havasu compition. It comes wired and assembled and programmed. Post #240

Build a 760 based ignition system with a zeeltronic. Buy two flywheels, take the magnets out of one, If you dont like total loss then put the stock flywheel back on and your system will start charging again. its pretty much plug and play you just have to hook up one power wire. I will send you the curve to run and it will fire right up and scream. Thats how i do them anyway on all my race and toy boats
