Hey Bobby I was wondering for a long time is it possible to get it carbon fiber look outside ?
A lot of guys ask this question, heres my opinion. It is possible but not a good decision. Its never good to leave any type of composite(fiberglass, carbon, kevlar) exposed to U.V. Now there will be someone with no real knowledge say otherwise. I've been told by chemists and high end painters alike who have been there done and seen the long term results. First, people think that a u.v. stable clear or laminating resin is fine. It is u.v. stable not u.v. proof. Sooner or later it breaks down, as the clear is breaking down the laminating resin of choice to build the product is being affected as well. When the clear can be fixed the resin turns brittle in the exposed laminate. The resin gets brittle to the point that a chunk will turn to a chunky powder in your fingers with pressure. There is the start of problems beyond the surface at this point. Which can cause the part to become brittle and break prematurely. I have seen this happen outside of skis. One painter/artist I trust told me that he has seen his work on carbon go bad. This guy does high end work on show bikes and cars so he knows a few things. He tells me that the amount of clear used in several coats of clear likes to delaminate in time. Regardless of the quality of the clear. I just don't like the idea of direct sun on the materials used to hold your expensive parts together. Mainly the problem is with the resins not the composite fibers. If it is a cosmetic bolt on that can be replaced I wouldn't worry.

Most fibreglass boats and that aren't painted.. ski boats with flashy metallic finishes have a clear gel coat don't they?

Personally I'd prefer the painted, but just curious..

Most production boats along with production personal watercraft are gel coat. Gel is the cheapest and easiest procedure for higher volume production to make the profit required. The ski and bass boats are mainly gel and add flake, metallic and pearl powders to get the wild design and keep the numbers right. Most of the time that is the case. When you see the semi custom and custom boats there primed and painted. Some high end companies will cheat a little and gel coat the hull components for the ease of layup then prime and paint. Paint is always the best case in weight, strength and lifespan, but the time and price are higher than gel. Both ways have there pros and cons, the product and price point usually determine what method or combination of methods are used.
