A lot of these depend on personal preference and riding style, even in surf.

I'd consider safety a big factor in unacceptable mods, i.e.:
- scupper
- a/m hulls without rear or front attachment points for tow ropes
- any mod that significantly impacts reliability

I left off one - Short poles. :smashfreakB: I like the bars to be at my hip, not 5 inches in front of my hips. Its so hard to control a ski smoothly with a short pole.

My friend has the Xscream 865 motor in a SJ & I suck riding it. Same ski with a tuned 701 is perfect. The 865 is just too much to ride smoothly in surf, to me.

Tight poles - they belong on the lake.

This is personal preference and certenally not a jab at anyone, skills, or crap like that. Just what I notice and 'feel' when I try others skis.
I just think some riders might have an easier time riding fast and controlled without some of the mods that seem to be better for flatwater only.

Wondered if anybody agrees. I seem to not be in the majority in my thoughts about the poles & motors. :)

nothing you can do to hurt your riding more than run your pole to short....

if u have any interest in doing any kind of wave riding (or turning over 5mph) it all needs to be done off your back foot...it makes me laugh when people think they need to spend 8k on a ski with more rocker so they dont pearl all the while running a -12 handlepole....

run a proper handlepole so you have weight on the tail and you wont pearl...pretty simple...

and as far as tight poles go a direct quote from Jk : "if your pole is stiff you will ride stiff".....and there is nothing gayer than a strait legger riding around in circles trying to reach his handlepole...

I shortend my pole -4.5 but I still ride with weight on the back of the ski. I ride surf stance and my rear foot is over my turn nozzle. After shortening it I instantly felt an improvement of control and feedback from the ski and felt like it was quicker to respond while surf riding. I do not plan to go any shorter because I feel like if I do it will take my weight off the rear of the ski.

#1 and only thing that I personally would not care to see in the surf is anything the truly affect reliability for the sake of power or weight.
And kart tanks unless you beach launch and dont go very far.

I run my pole a little tight.

And as for it being something that is bad for surfriding... Ross Champion runs his poles SUPER TIGHT!! Tight to the point that in about 5 minutes, you arms hurt from moving it haha And I would say he does quite well in the surf...

I agree. How tight you run the pole or it's length are personal preference mods. If it doesn't work for one person, it might work for someone else. It is very acceptable to set your ski up for you.
