oops forgot step 4! step 4 is getting your foot in your foot hold so tight that you dont want to pull it out until you flip so you then skip nice clean waves for usually...............15 solid minuets riding around in circles looking for that perfect flip wave ( that never comes ) until your forced to remove your foot because it has now fallen asleep because its so tight in the foot hold..... that you didnt do anything at all other than ride 5 mph and get in other peoples way.

I only hit pismo once or twice a year and decided to bring my superjet this past trip. Let me say that surf stance almost came naturally and made the riding experience much more enjoyable. But aside from that you surf guys have cajones for doing what you do in the waves. I respect the waves and respect you guys more now being a flatwater rider, because every damn 4-6ft wave that came barreling in had me riding for my life in the other direction

I totally agree with you guys, I have just gotten pretty good landing and riding out of rolls, now I get to learn all over again in ss!

It's way easier you will roll cleaner. You can put the weight on your front foot on the takeoff. Easier to lean forward in ss instead of kinda falling into your hood in foot holds. You don't need to set the pole on the hood to roll when going big. Plus if your trying to go big, you need to go fast. You can't go fast with your feet in the footholds and your pole on the hood approaching a wave without some crazy body movements that are going to throw you off a bit.

Plus 3/4 rolls don't hurt since your landing on your ass/back and sometimes even landing sloppy like that, you can pin the throttle and force the tray down into the water and ride away. So nice not having the dreaded foot hold 3/4 where you clap your knees into eachother or twist your knee closest to the water.....painful experiences.

Also easier to bail. I'm regular stance and I roll to the right (hence being able to under-rotate onto my back). I can see I'm going to under rotate and can then kick the tray out last second, land on my back, and keep my left hand on the handle bar.

Just BE SURE you pole isn't long enough to smash your thigh or kneecap on landings!!!! If it is, turf up some 26mm turf and bolt it to the underside of your pole and pad you bars/turn plate if needed. Wanna feel pain? Smash billet on your kneecap while landing a flip or roll from 20+...... Don't wish that on anyone.

Thanks for the tips Zack! I ride normal in ss also, but I roll to the left now. So I just have to put my left foot forward and go right instead, sounds easy enough, haha.

Right is right!

Goofy foot roll left

Regular foot roll right

Unless when you under rotate you want to land on your face.... Which is fun. I'm always nervous when I roll to the left I hardley do it. Just a mental game.

you are the reason
"fistfull of foam" blowsion video has a ton of trick tips for surf btw. I'm regular footed and roll left hold tight with throttle hand. I must say if your used to stiff poles and go to a spring pole watch out on the fails.

Man that post about riding around locked in searching for a flip wave is spot on.

Had a couple days this summer where I found myself searching for a flip wave that wouldn't come. Realized I just wasted a half gallon of fuel and five-ten minutes of time and went back to slashing/surfing. Then bam. Flipped a small wave I didn't think I could've flipped while I was trolling around in the way.

Right on,there have been many threads here relayed to riding around in footholds trying to rip surf, the more time passes the more most agree,it just makes everything better,if you get outa sync and need to bail you have much more control pushing away just as you said. Im in surfstance all the time,it feels more balanced and safer,Rolls feel better in SS on approach and landings. the guys that are really good at them in SS look 10x better in air doing them.A good angle re entri is impossible in rear holds.. guys that ride around in surf skis set up with retarded holds that wont even allow for surf stance have no clue how to ride surf other than inverts.

i tell everyone when they tell me they want footholds to forget it and just do a strap. they never listen because all you would see on here is foot hold installs.

its like this huge huge thing they feel needs to be accomplished. "ah yea man once i install my foot holds im going to go for it....." im like, if its not an AM hull, go to a surf shop and get straps then go to home depot and get thick wood skrews. drill those babys in and you can go for it right now AND be ahead of every one that is realizing a foot strap is where your foot naturally wants to be anyway.

i have now 5 guys, including my brother, now installing a rear foot strap and all i hear is "bro you were totally right! i should have listened! F*$& this foot hold! this is so much better! omg!"

put a foot strap in and dedicate 20 min to only using the strap and boom. your now a freerider. throw the trim in the trash while your at it.

Damn zack bright. Throw away the trim and put a kiteboard foot strap down. That stuff sounds old school. A straight surf boat designed for california surf is perfect like that agreed. Straight freestylers want to lock in to footholds and never fall out. Glued in. That style of riding in surf is straight dangerous. Surf stance riding is where im at 75% of the time. Left locked into front foothold and rear in back foothold. Ive never tried a rear footstrap yet. In surf i try to say safety first but we all know were the extreme side of safe. lock in to whatever holds you have but being able to fall out on many angles is a good thing. The rainbow bruise you suffered is still better than a spiral break of leg cause you were still locked in. Zack you got me thinking.... Maybe i will put a dakine strap back there. I cant knock it until i not only try it but get used to it. Jeff

I have never tried trim but I could see it being useful in certain areas. I would like to try it for a Summer.

Waves decide everything for me too. We get all kinds and you just have to roll with whatever she gives us!

Straps are super easy install as well. I used a strap just outside my foothold in my last hull. and had way better balance,It already had footholds installed. I like the ffh that gives me some room to move, never could get use to a front strap. Jk was the strap pioneer it's been passed down through the Cali big wave riders for yrs. Andrew wydeopen use to talk about it all the time
