Yesterday was probably the worst day of my life. We laid my best friend to rest after a short 5 weeks battling stage 4 lung cancer. Just can't believe it. 50yrs old. Strong as an ox and could do anything. He will be greatly missed. But during this process my buddy told me about this.
Got it all home and next is welding up a new mount. Score

Thanks, it's really hard to process. We worked together and played together. I was probably with him more than his family the last 10 yrs.
Pics of the damage.

Thank F@cking Christ, it's finally running!

Today is day 21 in a row and I've been averaging 14hrs/day. I was really looking forward to having Friday off but have just been told I'm needed till Saturday.

So I basically get 1 day off this month. o_O

And I'm salary so....:(

Ok, OCD, I need to ask, what is that contraption? I was trying to figure it out last time you posted it. You had the thing all built and then it was gone, now you do it again..lol I'm super curious now! :D

That was the before pic.

The red and black unit is an optical grading system that measures quality, size, moisture content and structural integrity. It grades based on a million parameters and optimizes solutions based on current board pricing that is updated daily. The big blue unit behind it is a new Trimmer. There's saws every foot that come down and trim the boards to whatever length the optimizer says is worth more.

The original line was built in 1989 and upgraded in 2004 to what was originally pictured. It consisted of a manual grading chain where 5 guys stood all day long staring at countless pieces of planed lumber, making trained decisions on what board is of what quality and marking them accordingly with corresponding colored crayons. A camera read the grade mark, trimmed the boards to length and then sent them to a 42 bin sorter that sorted them by grade and length.

The max line speed was around 85 lugs a minute and took 8 people to operate. The new line is fully automated and is already running at 115 lugs a minute after just 24 hours and takes a single operator.

We pulled the old unit out starting on Feb 28th and had the new line installed in less than 5 days. All the peripheral stuff took another 3 days to complete and then 2 more days of startup and testing and here we are. Our board is now worth about 15% more because of improved grading accuracy plus we are running 35% faster so it should be a pretty good little money maker.

It's also worth noting that here in the south, we never have to lay anyone off after these upgrades. We are usually operating so shorthanded that it just frees up resources to fill other positions. We have been trying to fill 24 new positions at this particular facility for over 14 months now and are still only at 18. We have run 21 job fairs that attracted more than 1400 interested parties, we offered employment to over 185 applicants and 124 accepted. Less than 80 actually showed up but less than 35 made it past the first week and various other infractions whittled us down to the remaining 18 that actually stuck it out.

It's not rocket science, we actually pay well but it's a hot, sweaty, noisy, chitty job that people today don't have to do. There are so many better jobs out there, we pretty much only attract people that can't work anywhere else.

There was a point a few years back where the old owners of these mills actually started hiring ex-cons. That was a fun experiment. o_O
