I questioned too if marine grade was necessary as my boat lives in the garage and only goes out in fair weather but in the end I decided on using only "marine" components. I just put in an inexpensive Kenwood 10" sub mounted in my side panels. I did a super budget stereo upgrade. I only have about $300 in everything.

For you guys doing marine stereos, do your head units have bluetooth capability already?

I ask because I just purchased a IP68 rated JL Audio Bluetooth module and installed it in my old truck thinking it would replace the aux cable I have been using to connect my phone to the stereo. Unfortunately for me, it only handles media and won't work on my actual phone calls. :(

The unit works flawlessly so for $38 shipped it's a great way to link your phone to your boat if your current head unit doesn't have the capability.
