Back to the 180 stabs.. i think the main reason why people think they are lame is because of all of the horror stories. if your not running keepers, you could F' sh*t up, and fast.

in my opinion, i think its a great way to learn how to feel the boat in the air. if you can prep that boat before taking off into the air, to want to change complete direction while its in the air, your on to something.

i am critical of what others choose to focus on because i feel that people arnt pushing the "sport" to its full potential...

the lack of creativity is something i would like to see change.. unfortunately it seems like the only progression is what different combination of hands and feet u take off the bars or out of the tray while flipping...even if the progression isnt coming in the form of waveriding in the traditional surfing sense there are sooo many things that can be done on a ski but arnt...

im talking crazy transfer lines doubling huge gaps wave to wave and mixing that with the flips and stuff...it seems like its moving more towards fmx on the water where the only thing that matters is whats done in the air..

one of the coolest things ive seen anyone do on a ski was when taylor doubled about a 30ft gap onto a wave that was doubling up (think a step up jump on a mototrack and he landed on the first "step")..so he boosted off one wave landed on the first wave of a double up and then cranked off a 20ft barrel roll off the lip off the second wave of the double up while going about 30mph..

if u watch that clip of scott watkins i posted in this thread (i just watched the entire vid and its insane) he has complete control of his ski and is just absolutely manhandling the thing, you dont really see that anymore....it seems like the "old school" guys really had excellent ski handling skills where now a days as long as u can flip and roll and fake some surf riding moves it dosnt matter about anything else and thats what bothers me..

.and you are right as long as u are having fun thats all that matters but as a whole id like to see people pushing the limits and not just how many different flip variations can be done..there are only so many "tricks" that can be done...riding surf on a ski is like being in a skatepark..use it to its potential..

You make some good points and I agree with alot of what you are saying. I think flatwater is also influencing surf riding as well. Aftermarket hulls and crazy power is allowing more aerial tricks with less skill level. However, I think trick progression is coming and some of it will be due to a/m hull designs helping to make some of these new tricks possible.

I refuse to make a choice between air and surf. Lately I've done nothing but work on carving. But I also want to do the air stuff.
Watching that vid also made me realize how short our lines are (normally).
Slower, less power. Less opportunity to work the wave.
So many ride so many different worlds.

The most respect goes to who does the most with what they've got....in any area.

BTW: my current avatar is the best and biggest condtions that I have personally seen in Florida.
Hurricane Bill.
Long lines, ground swell, west wind...it all came together. It happens maybe once a decade.
And lots of us were afraid. (at first)

that video rocks!
Bill was the defintion of epic for me so far! i burned 15 gallons of fuel in crystal clear Sebastian water that was smooth as glass with the biggest waves ive ever seen in person. It is still vivid in my memory of how beautiful and perfect the ocean was that day. Blew my motor 50 yards away from the boat ramp at the end of the day :) and it didnt even put a damper in my "Bill buzz" which lasted for a long time :)

A lot of Florida "old timers" have seen it here b4...they say.

But all waves in Florida will be compared to Bill Waves for the foreseeable future. I'm sure for much of the east coast.

West coast riders may have been "not so impressed" on that day. God bless 'em. They've got better waves. It's no secret. But the water is warmer here....(had to come up with something!)

But there was a thread about the misuse of the word "EPIC".

Bill was EPIC....until we see better....all other good days are just that. Good days.

Another 2 cents here, re-entries are tough but don't scare the :):):):) out of me like my ski coming down on top of me..... I'm a 3 year newb and backflip attempts in the ocean still get me going. Re-entry attemps just piss me off...

Hey, I did not stay at a Holiday Inn Express, but I did attempt my first two backflips saturday on some double-ups!!!!!!

Landing upside down is overrated!!!!!!!!!!!!

my attempts were all 10-15 ft up. if you keep your arms and legs locked when you land upside down, it keeps the ski from hurting you.

I landed one on the wammer hull with trim, but cant seem to get them past halfway on my stock sj hull.... we will see if I can get them down this year.
