Surfriding Which trick holds more respect to you: Re-entry or Backflip ?

Re entries

I live at the beach and ride a lot when the waves are good. I see MANY people that can barely stand up on a ski and the next couple of weekends they are backflipping. Overall when riding in the surf people should try to at least get to know the surf and ride some waves a while before flipping cause then thats all they do is look terrible riding around in the surf all sketchy looking for a wave to flip on. Thats my 2 cents worth but for the record I just surf the waves and dont flip.

Ha Ha... This is a great thread!

Anyway, Scott's freestyle boat was revealed at the 91 WF. (secret specs...under a cover until the freestyle event). It probably ran as good as a bone stock FX-1 (later, He also worked for Yamaha to develop the FX-1, @ the time the best surf boat).

What's wrong.....frustrated that you can't do good nose down re-entry yet? Watch some of the "old dudes" in those video's, take notes, then get out there and practice!

Wanna back flip? Easy, point it @ the break, Hold it wide and hang on.....Hope the water is deep.

I have been lucky to see some really great surf riders do their thing in person. Randy Laine, Fuzzy, Taylor Curtis, JFB and Curtis (Oside Crew) come to mind. Those guys RIP!

Thanks...But you make the coolest stuff!
Anyone know the word on Watkins now? Does he still ride?
He rode Daytona year before last....seemed a little rusty but still ripped.
Last seen on a stock looking 08 SJ (with a "D" cut plate), in Daytona 2008. It looked like he would rather be on a "squirrley" 550 or a FX-1.

More respect? That's a impossible thing to argue. Anyone can do a lame reentry, or a lame backflip. The style and amplitude of each trick is what sets it off. Trim/foothold/backflip hulls are style killers for both tricks to me. Do a surf stance flip at the 20 ft mark off an overhead wave, nose it in, and ride out without a wobble Or hit a overhead lip wide open and layed over getting 6ft + over the lip coming in nose first on the face of the white water. Guess what, you got skills and balls!

Well said.

Isn't our focus as freeriders supposed to be on having fun riding wherever and whatever your skill level, equipment, ride style? Why can't we just respect great riders, tricks and riding without being negative about what other choose to focus on or enjoy. I think it is great that everyone has their own ride style and tricks they focus on. Style is both personal and subjective.

i am critical of what others choose to focus on because i feel that people arnt pushing the "sport" to its full potential...

the lack of creativity is something i would like to see change.. unfortunately it seems like the only progression is what different combination of hands and feet u take off the bars or out of the tray while flipping...even if the progression isnt coming in the form of waveriding in the traditional surfing sense there are sooo many things that can be done on a ski but arnt...

im talking crazy transfer lines doubling huge gaps wave to wave and mixing that with the flips and stuff...it seems like its moving more towards fmx on the water where the only thing that matters is whats done in the air..

one of the coolest things ive seen anyone do on a ski was when taylor doubled about a 30ft gap onto a wave that was doubling up (think a step up jump on a mototrack and he landed on the first "step")..so he boosted off one wave landed on the first wave of a double up and then cranked off a 20ft barrel roll off the lip off the second wave of the double up while going about 30mph..

if u watch that clip of scott watkins i posted in this thread (i just watched the entire vid and its insane) he has complete control of his ski and is just absolutely manhandling the thing, you dont really see that anymore....it seems like the "old school" guys really had excellent ski handling skills where now a days as long as u can flip and roll and fake some surf riding moves it dosnt matter about anything else and thats what bothers me..

.and you are right as long as u are having fun thats all that matters but as a whole id like to see people pushing the limits and not just how many different flip variations can be done..there are only so many "tricks" that can be done...riding surf on a ski is like being in a skatepark..use it to its potential..

Why can't we just respect great riders, tricks and riding without being negative about what other choose to focus on or enjoy. I think it is great that everyone has their own ride style and tricks they focus on. .

I give those who can flip credit too! I am a pretty good surfrider and can do okay reentries (nothing like TC or Ross)I tried my first flip Sunday and it definately did not go to plan! only made it about 3/4 the way around and beat up my hull :( (first ride on the new ski too) It was on a 100 percent stock motor and hull... wish I had one of them nice motors with bling on it so it was easier to flip! haha Time to do more reinforcement and try again!
