who has fried a msd brain?

I used 3 sgl. channel units for years. One finally crapped the bed when water got in between the housing and potting material - it had lasted 7 years! I now have a new dual channel , afraid to install it til I come up with a water tight box for it.

you think that water can get in the dip switches? i ran like 7-8 tanks through mine and then it died. i had the backing plate installed everytime and the unit never got submersed in water, i also wiped a thin layer of dielectric grease on the rubber seal. i mean a thin layer.

Water can get in almost anywhere.
Potting can fail.
The DIP switches are probably rated as water resistant, but that's not always good for extended periods of time, either.

that superbirdie said dielectric grease, NOT lithium. there is a difference. As stated in previous post i did use some on the seal/dip switches.:fing02:
For general information: dielectric grease means it does not conduct electricity. Much to the horror of onlookers I use regular grease on the connections inside my ebox. Of course not on the dip switches!

I don't know! But I really don't trust the cable entry points to be watertight either. Never had those problems with the old sgl. channel but I used to see a lot of racers with totally enclosed multi channel units.

i just put a new brain on today, it works fine now. can`t wait to fry this one. Ratti, how did your brain go, where you riding it like matt or get screwed before a ride like me.

permatex dielectric tuneup grease:
Protects electrical connections and wiring from salt, dirt, water and corrosion. Extends the life of bulb sockets. Prevents voltage leakage around any electrical connection. Also prevents spark plugs from fusing to boots. Required for modern high energy ignition systems.
so yeah it keeps the bad stuff out and promotes good contact for electrical connections. i have an old grasshopper lawnmower that i fired up this spring and under heavy load the engine started knocking bad. i could hear the coil misfiring over the engine. got out the tuneup grease put a little on the plug and voilia ran like a 20 year old mower should :)

That is why I used ooooooooooor, I couldn't remember which.

Grease is grease to me, it's all sticky, makes a mess, and is really smelly if you use it in sexual situations. :shhh:

Whether it's lithium or dielectric grease....please don't use in sexual situations.

Oil works much better. I like 10W-30, but I'm not really that picky.

With all the headache that MSD ignitions give you is it really worth it? I mean do they really make that much of a difference?

Well I've got an MSD unit and the guy before me had a pretty good idea. He stuck a piece of firm rubber on the backing plate where the brain's dip switches go. That way when you tighten the brain down the switches become more resistant to water since they have a second seal.

they come like that from msd, hence me talking about the dielectic sexual love lotion on gaskets. i fried my brains on something back in highschool, what was it again, LED...LCD...oh yeah LSD wooo what a trip. Of all the things i lost, i miss my brain the most. Ozzy!

I don't know what to explain to you. You ride an X-2.

Yes, it makes THAT MUCH of a difference.
