who has fried a msd brain?

unfrying msd brain

So time is almost up to send this non working msd brain back for inspection and hopefully a brand new one. i had it on the bench and tested it again like 5 more times to make sure it wasn't working. same status as before, pickups work but not the output to the coil. you would think it was stuck in test mode. I talked to E-rok at daytona and i know he cooks his enhancer if it gives him touble. I threw my brain ontop of my gas space heater and cranked it on for 15 min. i picked it up to check it and i had to throw it on the bench it got that hot. I quickly checked the dip switches to make sure they were not melting. i actually flicked #4 test mode and then put it back on the heater and called it a night. 24 hours of frying this sucker and it is working again!!!:icon16: i had to take a pic, this is just msd sweetness here. if i cook my buddies this week and get it going....i am forced to take a new pic.

Can you explain in more detail about the theory and practice of "cooking" an MSD to restore it? Sounds interesting......seriously.

this is how i did it, the brain on the heat vents, dip switches up, wires out of the main heat. i left the temp the same as always at night so the unit would have heated up and down in a cycle for about 24 hours. i believe E-rok sticks his enhancer in the oven and, well, cooks it.

i have no clue, i am no scientist. i was hoping to heat it enough to redo the soldering connections within the potting but i would think other stuff would melt before that temp is reached. i am thinking it gets rid of moisture that get in from the wires. who knows???

wouldnt a microwave do this in about 10 seconds?

Thats really cool that it came back to life. If you wanted to be sure to get all the moisture out.....you use a vacuum chamber. Throw it in, under full vacuum for a few hours and it will definetly remove any moisture from the unit and no worries about overheating it.

I dont know how that would work with a msd enhancer?

I know I've done it twice or maybe even three times. When I did it I would put the enhancer in a conventional oven and then turn the heat on, I was hating on preheating the oven for some reason. (waste of energy!) I left it in there for about ten minutes periodically checking the temperature of the enhancer. The oven was usually set to warm or just above warm. You guys can hate on the idea but I'll continue doing it until it's really baked.

D-roc if you have any more electrical questions I'll tell Darsh, Team Stand-Up's electrician, to come pay you a visit. LOL!!! His ski is so custom that it starts as soon as the sun goes below the Daytona horizon, when he's miles away from the start button.

my guess is that since the dip switches arent sealed, water gets into/around them and shorts stuff out.

its probably more common around salt.

'cooking' them evaporates the conductive moisture that is grounding the unit to the chasis.

thats my little theory

whoooa this is getting deep. it could be magic. E-rok, i am just glad darsh's ski starts lol. I am going to try it on my buddy's broken one this week and will post if i get the same results. i can agree that the dip switches can let water in, could be the #4 switch for test mode and it just grounds out without being flicked. whatever, it worked and i like it.

got another one working. this one died on my buddy steve and he put it in a box with a space heater for 48 hours. it is now got power output to the coils. we haven't got them installed or running yet but i am very hopefull. i think this is pretty cool, i really like TL and my ski is nothing really great without it, but when it does have it in, it rips. seeing all this msd together is pure happiness :jester:
