Funny, im sure the 5,000+ people that made the treck down to the shore line at the London bridge at night time to watch us ride would disagree with you.
People actually do make money doing what we do, doing shows. The last show I did was during the Calgery Stampede and it brought in over 150,000 people to watch in just 2 weeks.

Attitudes like yours is what won't push the sport.

Dude 5000 is NOTHING!!! and that's WORLD FINALS ATTENDENCE NUMBERS, plus WF is FREE! How many would have been there if there was an admission?? The Calgary Stampede is a MULTI VENUE Equestrian/rodeo event which I'm sure is very popular in TEXAS, so I certainly wouldn't attribute the attendance of that event to any freestyle watercraft sideshow. (No insult intended) Here in San Diego CA, which has a greater population than the entire state of Texas, The city of Oceanside will not even consider us for a free ride event because past events have drawn to few of spectators to justify shutting down a section of beach. Yes that was a real slap in the face and is the main reason for my posts. I'm sorry you feel I have a non supportive attitude, because I'm not trying to fight with you or anyone else, I'm just pointing out a little dose of reality- our sport has few followers, not because it isn't cool, just because they like other things. Consider this, Do you get all amazed when you see a dude Back flip a snow mobile? Yeah its cool and all but nothing you haven't seen a 100 times before at any extreme sport event, well that's how they feel when they see us do extreme stuff in our sport.

I guess some people don't see my confusion. Just to get into the attempt a backflip game you have to spend 10k plus. And you look at all the build forums and the average build is way over 20k. I've been at the lake when other "back flipable" skis are also there. Yes they all think its awesome. The fans at the night session proved it. But when tell them it cost that guy say 20k plus to build the ski they all shake their heads and laugh. They are amazed when you say it weights around 240 lbs and has an 1100 with 160 hp. (Again ball parking it). But they start laughing again when you tell them but you cannot hold the motor pinned for two long or else it will blow up. Like you can with my SN's or 550sx.

Why buy a Ferrari when my Geo gets me to where I'm going just fine?

I think the answer to your question is, because we can.

This.

im still learning the basics, and just watching the guys flip and spin and clear 10+ feet off the water is impressive enough that i want to try it. i went from my SN 650 to a friends brawler and bob gen 3, neither were big motor machines, 701 and i think 760, but the smile i had on was ear to ear. i do this pure for enjoyment. if something costs me 10K and i love every moment of it, its money very well spent. I drive 1.5hr almost every time i ride, and i do it because i love it. I cant wait till the day i can afford to have a light weight hull with some good power to flip around. till then, i putt-putt around watching.

now the 35K skis, if not for competition, i dont quite get. but when you ahve the extra funds and its what you love, whos to say you cant go do it? you earned it, i just hope its enjoyed!

A small part of your post, but you realize that there are over 4million people in just Harris county (Houston) Texas. 2012 shows San Diego at 1.26 million.

Exactly, when its a hobby you enjoy why not? It goes along with alot of hobbies, horses, fishing, drag racing, motocross, wakeboarding, etc. I think people that are not into the ski thing get thrown off by the size of these things. They cant comprehend that you can put that kind of money into something that small. Even when I had my fx1 and RN outsiders could not believe I would spend $700 on a b pipe, I would proceed to tell them thats nothing and explain how expensive it can get, they would just laugh, but those same people wouldnt think anything of spending 40-50K on a new truck or boat. Oh well, different strokes for different folks.

There is also "cognitive dissonance" at work. "If I cant afford a 30k boat then its probably not that much fun anyway". This drives most decision making and is also why humans can engage in politics and religion.

This whole topic should be a PWCtoday discussion. This is a freestyle forum. Not exactly the place to question or insult the actions of freestylers.

Whether you are offended or not the OP asked a legitimate question...

Maybe he can't afford the big money trampoline boats and is jealous or maybe he's genuinely curious and rides a jet ski differently then others.

The proper answer is a simple "because that's what they want to do"

which is the answer to "Why blow big money on ANYTHING?"

Basically this topic plays with the definition of "jet ski".

To me as long as it has a pump and a tray it's really all the same thing.

But here is the thing...

By definition of "trick" the more purpose built the design of the equipment the weaker the terms meaning. At some point a trick becomes the purpose in itself. Which is what I think the OP was getting at.

The way I look at this is the way I look at anything in life..... If I love something I don't care how much it costs I just want to do it to the full potential of whatever it may be. I personally can only afford on big hobby and this is what I choose. Everyone has different interests and passions in life and I never rip on anyone no matter what it mite be. As long as you're happy who cares right! My wife has over 200 pairs of shoes, 150 pairs of sunglasses and more jewelry than I want to think about.....where as I have blown out shoes, ripped up tank tops and Walmart cargo pants lol! She chooses fashion, I choose a $30 k ski........don't judge me;)

This cracks me up...$20k is peanuts! It costs in excess of $20 million to run a Nascar team for a season and what do they do??? Oh yes, they go round in circles. To each their own, if you don't like it, don't do it.
Chris.

But those guys are playing with other peoples money. Many guys (kids) with $30K skis didnt actually have to pay for them, so cost doesn't count. Im sure some people are spending a great deal of their income/net worth on what is essentially a noisy wet trampoline. That is the puzzling part.

You're not comparing apples to apples, though - a pro-sponsored Team is a very far cry from a hobbyist, an enthusiast. I think you will have a hard time finding more than a handful private individuals that spend $20 million to race NASCAR.
Nobody here was bitching about the WF competitors spending the money that they (or to some extent, their sponsors) spend on their machine. This was about hobbyists.

However, this is one of the few sports where private individuals can easily duplicate a pro-level competition setup.
