Back From the Dead - Yamaha FX-2

I made some templates for the reinforcement and cut my glass. Before I laid it down, I had to fill the gaps on each side of the tunnel. I used some pink foam and it turned out great!

I marked the line with a sharpie

Juuuuust right.

After that it was time to lay some glass! FINALLY. I decided that I was going to reinforce the bottom of the hull, and luckily I was able to kill 2 birds with 1 stone. I made my templates to overlap slightly and did it all at once with 1 layer of 17oz cloth. Took a few hours of smoothing and rolling to get most all the bubbles out but it came out nice!

Tomorrow, reinforcing the gunnels! That will be much easier ha.

I was able to get my tubbies placed and drilled the holes. I asked several people and looked at many threads but I believe they are placed correctly. I talked with Tom through email and he said to install the tubbies with enough room on the bottom to blend them in with thickened epoxy. He did say you might need to trim the front bottom corner and I think I will need to do that but just barely. I haven’t installed them fully yet but I wanted to do my wide rails first. I decided to install them permanently and use thickened epoxy and bolting them into place. I will also glass them in once they are mounted. @E350 I took some measurements that might help you decide where to place yours when you decide to install them. If you are going to use the bolts, drill the holes straight through the hull not at the angle of the holes in the tubbie. The first hole I drilled was at the angle of the center hole and it ended up pulling the tubbie downward when I threaded the bolt through the hull. I decided to drill the center hole first, then level the whole thing. I drilled the hole smaller than the bolts so they would thread into the hull itself and hold the tubbie in place while drilling the other holes. I then drilled the rear hole and put a bolt in that also. That allowed me to be able to flex the front of the tubbie into place and drill my front hole.

It looks like 26 3/4” measuring from the transom, and 1/2” gap from underneath the rail. Even gap across the top.

I decided to glass in my wide rails before permanently installing the tubbies. I kept the original piece I had cut from the rails to use as a general template for the foam. I measured the rear of the ski and set this piece to that width. The first template was made from cardboard.

That got traced onto the pink foam for the actual nose piece.

After that I used 2.5” screws to attach the foam to the underside of the rail. I trimmed the excess screw with a dremel flush with the top side of the rail and finally hit it with the sander. They are very smooth now. After that was secure I used some sandpaper to shape my rail to the desired shape and width. This rail closely matches my stock Superjet rail width and shape. Looks nice I think!

Wow, your glass skills are awesome.

As to hull design, I am interested to hear your ride report with your wide rail design. No doubt the ski will hold an edge with those rails. A straight rail would seem to carve a straight line, while a rockered rail would seem to carve a turn to the inside.

Since I have recently discovered how tightly an FX-1 can carve a turn when the stock rockered rail of the nose is engaged, I am interested to see what you find engaging the nose with the wide rails. (Maybe it will be less weight forward/aft sensitive (i.e., submarined or not enough engaged)?

BTW, I have read that the rear rail corners at the stern should not be cut out, that it is the closed box (which all stock standup skis had) that makes the rail perform. So, I am also interested to see what you do with your build design in this regard and how it performs.

Wow, I imagined your shop with pink and green and other colors splattered all over the walls!!! But, I'm impressed with your organization

Thanks Scott! Funny you say that, my house is actually pretty mellow! My basement is tiny, but its what I have to work with. My entire life goal is to just have a freaking garage, im so tired of rolling around in the gravel. Don has seen the ledge you have to step up to get inside the basement, literally the first thing he said was "How do you get ski's in there?!" Good thing im a gorilla haha
