Brocks Gulf Tribute Build! **Test Ride\Problems**

Im going to be getting up early tomorrow hopefully laying down some primer if the weather is nice. try to beat the heat. its stupid hot here its been about 95+ every day. Cant step outside for a second without putting sunscreen on or else youll get burned. The lake is aweful, the lake temp is 95 DEGREES yes thats right. To be honest Im not really in a hurry anymore, thats not even enjoyable. Just 3 weeks ago is was a respectable 85 degrees. The highest the lake got last year was 90 degrees. Global Warming? I guess my deadline is august now, will be hitting the surf then. Hopefully the ocean is more refreshing.

Yes that thread was fully of whinning.

It's been like that down here for the last 2-3 weeks and we still ride. The breeze and the spray still feels good but if you drop into the water, it's pretty nasty. The biggest problem we have right now is we're not getting any rain and with the temperatures as high as they are, everything is starting to wilt and die.

On a side note, since you're spraying outside and planning to do it in the morning, make sure you wait until the dew has dried up or the excess humidity will mess things up.

Thanks for that. We gets tons of rain here, about every night but our lawn is still dead and things are some plants of ours are dying. Wish i lived somewhere where the water was 80 degrees now. That would be nice and refreshing without being too cold.

Why..... Ever since sunday when I was originally going to paint it the weather has been bad putting it back further and further. Its rained or been really windy every evening. Ive had volunteer work and real work in the mornings... july 4th is not gona happen.
In the mean time. I put the shed plastic back up so I can spray in the shed, but weather still plays a little roll. Have a bunch of equipment outside that cant get wet.

Well when I always did my ghetto booths, they were always done immediately prior to painting and taken down as soon as I finish. The issue with the jeep was I did painting over a long period of time and was in a rush to do something else afterwards so I didn't take the plastic down immediately and it fell.

I was originally thinking of just running in gelcoat. But I have everything ready, if I was going to ride in gelcoat I wouldnt have done all the body work, and I would have just got bstock turf instead of nice expensive turf. If it was white gelcoat I wouldnt have even painted it actually. Im going to the surf the first of august, and I want to get some time in on the lake before I kill myself.

perfect day today, 80 degrees with cloud cover. 1 tack coat of primer followed by a more covering coat. Letting dry overnight. Im really happy for my first primer experience, it layed on REALLY smooth, minimal runs. The over spray gets EVERYWHERE though. wasnt really expecting it to go all over.
Sorry for the crappy pics, camera was not available today.

Do you really need to wait 24 hours for primer? Usually that stuff dries before you can get it all out of the gun but I'm sure there are many different types. Looks good so far though.

You REALLY REALLY want to ride that thing on the lake before you get in the ocean. I've been riding mine for months and I think it'd be kind to say that it's going to be difficult in the ocean. It's going to take you a few rides just to figure out how to turn again because the tray is so wide.

Yeh i figured its going to take a while to get used to. hopefully I can ride everyday and nothing breaks that I can get good enough again to go to the surf.

The primer says it takes 8 hours to dry (sandable) in 70 degree weather. So i finished up around 3, so Ill just wait overnight anyways.

Always a good idea to wait 24 to 48 hours so if any of the primer sinks into the scratches it won't show in the paint!

slow progress while priming, two days for the bottom, two days for the top (first coats the 1st day, sand and prime again the 2nd day). Tomorrow is my last day of primer hopefully, today I got the top sprayed, but I guess I didnt clean the gun properly on the last coat and got some particles I need to sand out. Once primer is done it should be fast going, basecoat dries really quick, which gives me the ability to do both colors and clear on the bottom in one day.

Im not as good off as I thought I was. The top is pretty flawless so far, but the bottom there are about 3 or 4 pinholes I didnt see and skipped over with the bondo, and on the hood there is about 3 or 4 pinholes as well which will hopefully be covered up by my gulf graphic logo.

Well not sure if you should call then pinholes... Craters maybe? Probably half the size of a dime or so, but they are pretty strange. Ill dry and get some pictures. Cant believe I didnt see them.

From your description, sounds like fish eye to me. That sucks. Usually caused by the surface having some kind of impurity on it that won't allow the paint to stick. Depending on where it is and how often I'll see it, I either choose to fix it or leave it.

Im really figuring out this hole, i mean hull is not symetrical at all. The hood is high on one side, the rear of the hood is off, the list goes on. Which is making my fine line job super hard, trying to follow lines with the tape will not work. I should have just stuck with one color.

EDIT: screw painting, I just tried the basecoat for the first time and i failed horribly. I used all the recommended amount of reducer, followed gun settings, and it came spitting out of my freshly cleaned gun. I tried messing with the gun settings some more but still came out blotchy and spitty. Maybe my gun is broken, now this is another day wasted and will have to sand it down tomorrow
