Very nice! I'm a fan of the Gulf GT-40s as well. I want to see this rig in person one of these days. If you need tools, post up. I'm 30 minutes down the road and don't mind helping. Just not on the turf. That stuff is like Kryptonite to me.

Thanks man. Youll see it soon! Im getting really close.

EDIT: Clear isnt going good on my hood. The gun isnt spraying consistantly, It sprays like it should for a minute then sprays about 1\3rd of what it should. No idea whats wrong, the gun is spit spot clean...

Are you filtering the clear before it goes into the gun? The smallest spec will jam the gun up. All the paint kits I've bought came with little funnel shaped strainers.

yup, filter it going into the mixing cup, and with a new filter, filter it before it goes in the gun. I just lubed all the joints\needle and that seemed to work. So all my painting is DONE!

heres it all said and done. Needs wetsanding\buffing. How do you guys recommend me doing this? Right now im just wetsanding with 1000 then 1500 then 2000. What should i do after that? I dont have a buffer or anything.

what do you guys recommend for buffers? We are going to go out shopping for one soon. I know that for buffing the ski I will need a heavy buffing compound, then medium, then light and then swirl remover. Or unless you guys have a better idea. Wetsanding didnt work out so good. After 2000 grit its not that shiny (im not sure if its supposed to be shiny or not) I dont think I sanded through clear coat because I have 5 coats of clear on and it would take a lot with 2000 grit to sand through it.

brand of buffer? I think mine is a Ryobi. Pretty stout and hasn't given me any trouble in the couple years I've owned it. Used it on cars, boats, skis. Buy extra pads. You'll want them. I hate using a pad I've used on one car on another. It's silly, but that's just me.

you know, the hardest thing is finding pads. I got a ryobi buffer also and trying to find APPLICATOR pads is like trying to find a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. I can find polishing pads all day, but nothing works like the applicator pad. So I have to use that, then wash\dry it and its time consuming. Ive tried every auto store, and they have nothing.

just got done with probably the 2nd most worrying on this whole build. Cutting up my 300sx tank that took me FOREVER to find and cutting another nice big hole in my hole:nana:
Everything turned out well though, and another milestone complete. Next, battery location

look at the orange peel! (literally)

cut a two inch hole in the tank, then cut some plastic off the doner tank and "welded" the filler neck on, then urethane all around. this thing isnt coming off or leaking any time soon

Have you tried NAPA or Carquest? try calling around. Most any automotive paint store carry buffing compound and pads. the 3M system works very well.

tried carquest. Will call napa tomorrow.

Im making a hood ratchet system now. Im trying to color my strap (red one I had laying around) Bleaching it didnt work to turn it white, so maybe Ill have to RIT dye it. Maybe if I try and dye it yellow it will turn orange since its red?

Just curious. Last time i painted i was told not to use any buffing compound or wax for at least 1 month after you paint. The paint is constantly curing and if you apply a wax it will seal the paint from breathing and cause it to cure improperly. 3m makes a buffing compound you can use and a wax directly after spraying but is light and allows the paint to cure properly. I bought mine at automotive sherwin williams. If im wrong someone correct me please.

ive heard about 1 week but not one month. Ive applied no wax\or sealant, just wet sanding and some rubbing compound which isnt like a wax that seals and protects, rubbing compound kind of bites into the clearcoat to get a nice shine just like high grit sand paper.

dont worry about the paint so much. Its a jet ski and you will be suprized how quickly the elements abuse it no mater how well you take care of her. 3 feet away and you cant tell anyways. Get that bieeattch on the water! so i can ride it
