Spoke to someone that has an aftermarket hull this past weekend and he said he was not going to be riding much......... Cannot find insurance. Has too much tied up in it........... So what is the freaking point of building one of these ski's if your not going to ride it? Seriously. Dont let anybody ride it and you dont have to worry about liability. If you get rear ended yours or their auto insurance will cover it. Park it inside your garage or work shop and if anything happens, homeowners should cover it. (Keep all reciepts)

Mine is insured as a 92 Yamaha with a highly escalated replacement value. Since it uses my Yamaha title and parts my insurance company said they would write it. Took some convincing but ultimately they were okay with it. I pay 57 dollars a month.

I think you are mistaken about that.

Has anyone checked with the various aftermarket hull manufacturers to see if they know of insurance companies that would cover the stuff they make?

Yep thats what my auto insurance company told me too. They do not cover trailered pwc, unless the ski/trailer have there own PWC policy. Also they said jetskis cannot be considered contents, even if they are INSIDE my cargo van...lol Of course you can sue the other driver for the cost,... IF it is there fault.

They probably could care less.Gee,they won't even provide an HIN for you.

l agree with you BK.What's the point of building one if the bitch is going to sit in your garage.l haven't got over yet not having any insurance. But it won't stop me from riding.l think someone mentioned putting replacement cost on the HIN they used from another ski.Wonder how much l could get for my 96 Waveventure? lol

So, any breakthroughs on this subject yet?

Sounds like some guys are having luck with rolling the 'homebuilt' ski into their homeowners insurance? My buddy claims his Stunt ski is insured through his homeowners.

I'm not a homeowner, so thats not an option for me. But if its the only way to get it insured, I could give the ski to a family member who is a homeowner...

I have called tons of insurance companies including ones that specialize in raceboat, powerboat, ect and none of them would write a policy because of the homemade HIN. I did get one company that would write the policy if you provided TWO $500 marine surveys, but the minimum hull value had to exceed $50,000 and policys started at $3k/yr. I also tried adding it to my homeowners, but my insurance agent could not add a rider to my house policy due to the homemade hin #. I gave up last year.

It's federally regulated and not easy to get for the manufacturers. A real pain in the ass from what I hear, in fact.
Ski Clinic is able to do it only on RTR skis built inhouse.

So if your customer has the ability to easily register it as homebuilt, why go through the trouble.

i just cant imagine its that difficult, if they can do it on a 200 kayak and still make plenty of profit.
seems stand up skis are the only boats produced that dont. just seems odd to me. and im sure there is
a good reason not arguing that, but there would be benefits to it such as insurance, titles, ease of transferring owners etc...

I don't see any benefits to the manufacturer.

Besides, that's applicable only in the US - and that's a pretty small market.

A kayak doesn't have an engine, gas, oil, electrical components. Much easier to meet the guidlines for an approaved vessle.

I'm not real concerned with why the manufacturers don't sell the hulls with HINs. But I think its stupid the insurance companies won't insure these things. I'd be willing to pay a lot...just for peace of mind. All they'd have to do is appraise them
