I just bought an inflatable 15' boat new for under $600. It is stamped to be able to take up to 10hp motor on the transom. It came with MCO and USCG HIN#s, a breeze to register and I can insure it if I want. I admit I dont know the laws, but seems to me just like a new AM hull.... it is a registerable boat that is sold w/o without a motor.

I'm not real concerned with why the manufacturers don't sell the hulls with HINs. But I think its stupid the insurance companies won't insure these things. I'd be willing to pay a lot...just for peace of mind. All they'd have to do is appraise them

I spent months trying. After talking to many insurance people. The general consencious was that even if you manage to somehow get one insured, I would anticipate BIG problems if you ever try to put in a claim.

I am insured thru progressive for 300k liability, with comp and collision, cash value of 15k on my q8 sky. Cost per year $154. It has a state issued vin (home built boat) and my ins guy approved everything before i even purchased the ski.

I had a progressive policy that I managed to get there website system to issue me. I got a call from a supervisor 2 days later telling me they had to refund my money because of the homebuilt HIN. It sounds like Progressive does work in some states though.

One big reason is there is nothing to appreciate it against. It is custom, They cannot pull it up on the NADA and assign a value to it. In other words they have no way to accurately verify its true value. There is no baseline other than your word.

How much are you willing to pay?

If I knew it was good insurance, and I'd be covered FOR SURE, I dunno, I'd cut a check for $500 a year in a heart beat. I mean, we're talking about $16,000 here, that's light enough for two guys to pick up, and RUN away with, literally. I'd probably pay a lot more than that even.

I was 100% honest with my ins guy. He told me how to go to the DNR to get a HIN. I have has ins on this since jan of 2012

Currently, my BOB has liability coverage though progressive, but they wouldn't give me full coverage. But they didn't have any problem giving me just liability. I have the paperwork for that. This is in WI also.

Would you mind giving me your guys number? I'll give it a try

Progressive wont take a homemade boat for physical damage. But you can insure it as a 2011 (insert boat name here) and hin from dnr. Then its fine

That's not what they (Progressive) told me last year.
