DIY Total loss or MSD TL upgrade box 270USD?

Are either of you running the ribbon cable extension? I've seen several extensions fail.
I removed the extension cable from the Zeel unit and had the same results.

There is spark when I crank the motor using the start button and the Zeel unit is plugged into my laptop.
There is NO spark when I crank the motor using the start button and the Zeel unit is NOT plugged into my laptop.

Such a weird way for it to fail.
Ya it really is. It’s gotta be in the +5v voltage regulation circuit. I’d imagine the CDI circuit is independent and the IC that is the “brain” of the unit can be powered by the programmer or a 5v circuit powered by the battery and that’s why it works when plugged into The programmer.

That makes perfect sense. Probably could even make it work with an external 5v power supply to the right pin on the ribbon cable. Wouldn't really want to do that though.

I did some “digging” in mine lol. Where it had the hole in the potting looks like it could be a “linear voltage regulator” with a heat sink. So makes sense that if that burned up it would have these results like you explained. Not sure how to test it but maybe I’ll try to replace it…

Yup that would do it. If you can get to the pins test for battery voltage on input side and +5v on the output side.

Any theories on what might be killing the voltage regulator (or maybe some other part of the 5v supply circuit)?

Sounds like both of these died sitting in storage over the off season (?) so it probably wouldn't be the obvious usual suspects like heat or over voltage or hooked battery up backward or something like that.

Got the new unit from JetManiac today. Put her in and she's perfect now. It was absolutely the Zeel unit.
Is it possible you had the lanyard hooked on all winter? I think the zeel stays powered if the lanyard is hooked up and that would certainly shorten that regulators life.

I very likely had the lanyard (surf switch) engaged and usually do from clearing it out on the trailer. I can’t remember if I had the battery ground hooked up after Daytona, but it might of been.

I cleared out more potting- I’m getting 5v on pin 4 without the programmer hooked up. The part I suspected was a linear regulator is a mosfet. It has power to it and ground at one terminal. Nothing at the other but idk what it turns on, guessing it fires the coil?

I suppose it’s possible that it’s working again after scraping around in it too.

One thing I had noticed while it was still in the ski is if I unplugged the programmer it would still have spark if you crank the ski for around the next 30seconds time. Longer than that and it wouldn’t spark. 5B72F666-BAFC-4108-A835-11B46A4E6255.jpegLike the programmer maybe wakes it up, but it won’t wake up on its own.

This is interesting watching this. I hope you get it sorted

Nope no lanyard. I also take my AG battery out after every ride and did the same before I put it in storage for winter. No power was going to the unit for about 4 months.

I tried to program my 62t zeel all evening and kept getting "error". Finally unhooked the battery and it went in first try.
Anyone experience this or know why it may happen? Here's the error

We get asked all the time about zeeltronic curves, So we put them up on the website. Just cut and paste the link and it will download it to your pc.
This is the wax v3 curve which makes great power and excellent throttle response.
Feel free to use them for your personal use

Are you all starting to put silicone over the cable port to ensure water doesn't touch the pins?

Also on the new wax v3 map, is it as easy as just clicking load > v3 map > open > success?

I haven’t had problems yet, but definitely it seems that the old style cable port is the instant failure point for these units with water in ebox.

I was talking to Borut and he explained that the new style port on the 62t and 32t units is more suitable to watercraft applications and will be featured on all watercraft units in future.

As for the wax curve I think yes, but that’s a question for wax :)
