Threads like this tend to bring out alot of emotion from people. It's kinda like bragging rights in my opinion. I would say it out loud(but I would get shot), out of everything I have been able to ride thus far-may favorite motor setup is Derek's 6mil 61X jetworks motor. When I chose a engine builder, I had a good relationship w/LPW and trusted LPW so thats who I went with. If I had had the same relationship with all the builders, I would still be runnin my LPW 701 because I would not be able to decide on which builder to go with. I feel the #1 thing u can do is ride as many ski's as u can and then pick the one u like the most and carbon copy it!

I totally agree!I must say at this time in day i would either go with a jetworks or x-scream.

Even though this is really just a pot stirring, thread I'll tell you what I think anyway. My suggestion is to ride different boats and see who builds what you like. After that, talk to the builder you're considering and get a feel for them. In my opinion, the relationship with the builder is almost as important as the quality of the work. I would settle for slightly less power(thankfully I don't have too)in exchange for the relationship I have with my builders. I trust them completely and wouldn't trade my situation for anything. I've been dealing with them for many years now and plan to for years to come.

I had the opportunity to ride a JetWorks Superjet superstock. That thing accelerated a lot harder than what I was expecting. It hit REAL hard everywhere. It was an ex race boat. It wouldn’t make a good freestyle boat plus why do you need a freestyle boat going over 60mph anyway. The guy who owns it also has a freestyle engine in his other Superjet also by JetWorks and it runs hard right from idle with lots of midrange. I think it is important to tell your engine builder exactly what you expect from his engine. If he has certain recommendations ask him why he thinks they are important and follow his advice. After riding a few boats and talking to a few riders I vote for JetWorks. After talking to them face to face I am currently having carburetor work done and I’m convinced they will be porting as well.

Derek's 6mil 61X jetworks motor.

I've got this exact setup (right down to the cylinders you sold me Gil!) and I must say I love it. I thought it might be a bit much at first but I got EXACTLY what I wanted.

Being on the other side of the world and the time differences, I relied on e-mail for communication. I shot off a few e-mails to various big name companies saying I wanted an engine built, and am willing to spend the money. I got a few half-assed replies from some, but the only real interest I got in what I was doidn was from Art, as he was certain he could do something special on a budget (hence the 61x cylinders rather than a Lamey).

I sourced all my parts and then some and had the sent to Art. After discussing my riding style, availability of Avgas/pump gas etc...I had the engine built and sent without physically speaking a word to him.

If Art builds race engines anything like his freestyle engines, then damn, I want to get back into racing. This engine hits harder than I could ever imagine and makes a ported big bore limited 760 feel like a piped 650.

Although I have never ridden any other engines apart from those built by myself or other local builders, I can safely say this is exactly what I wanted and wouldn't go anywhere else. That being said, this is more of a success story rather than shop A versus shop B scenario.

Communication was a big deal to me....I'm impatient and for the most part angry at the world. I didn't have to take any medication at all when dealing with Jetworks.... ;)

Wise words. Charles is correct. Same with who you order parts from. Build a relationship.

I just got back my engine from XScream. I built the 5mill 828cc 61x/62t. I have not rode it yet. Shooting for next weekend.
But as far as knowledge, and personabilty, as well as the outcome of the finished complete package; carbs, pipe, etc..... I am very pleased with X Scream so far. Quick turn around time, and when and if they or I had any questions or concerns about my parts there was always an email or phone call made from one or the other of us depending on the situation. I am replacing my LPW 790cc B/B with this motor so we will see how it compares. Should be a great improvment with the stroker crank though.
