for my EDC...the first round is 147gr subsonic, the rest are FMJ's.....magazine is typically downloaded by 1 as well..

What does that mean?

Interesting to hear about EDC mags.
I have JHP in my EDC, and because I can only carry 9 rounds, I have mags stragicly located (aka scattered) in case I need to grab one. They are loaded JHP-FMJ alternating.
Thought being that if I get to the point where I need to reload, my adversary will have had time to hide behind something that the JHP won't penetrate but the FMJ might.

EDC = Every Day Carry, which I still cannot do. Still can't have a firearm in my vehicle on company property either.

I guess I was wrong. Hornady offers a ton of choices in every caliber. My Ruger is loaded with Hornady Custom 124gr XTP and my C92 has Hornady 115gr FTX Critical Defense.

What's the logic behind the 147gr subsonic? Bigger boom? Wall penetration?

Question for Rileym21; How come most items show temporarily suspended on the Hornady website?

download by 1 means you dont fill the mag all the way up....

the more you compress the spring, the harder the gun is to load with a full magazine...

an AR for example, most commnly uses a 30 round mag.......the seasoned competition shooter or solider only loads 28

because, when loading with the bolt closed it is exponentially more difficult to get the mag to seat while working against the spring

the 147 subs is stuff I got from my dad when he was police chief....theory was/is that the heavier bullet was meant to provide a little bigger 'thump' of stopping power...as well as increased penetration for heavy winter clothing

all this while retaining hi capacity.....

good idea on the mag scattering swap.......I have been thinking about stashing 1 extra mag in each vehicle for that exact reasoning

Thats a good point on the download thing, i've experienced it but never thought about pulling a round for ease of reload. I'd be fine with it on my Highcap rifles, but I don't know that I want to give up a round on a 8 round mag.

OCD,
This spring Hornady decided to temporarily suspend many of the low volume items to decrease downtime from so many change overs to produce so many different items. The demand for common calibers is unbelievable right now.

I don't have a scale, so I don't know how much weight the 'hog' bullet retained. But this is the .45ACP 230gr Federal HST +P

The bullet on the right was taken from a 150ish pound hog's spine.

I went to the range last night and shot about 9 different pistols with different rounds including 38, 9, 40 and 45.

After doing a bit of research and then firing different weapons, I've decided to go with the G19.

Now, my only decision is to go with the Gen 3 or the Gen 4. Last night I put about 50 rounds through a Gen 3, and it felt very comfortable in my hand, so the swappable backstrap isn't a big deal for me.

What I do like about the Gen4 is:

It's supposed to have less kick
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_s8e6zkI3w

It has a heavier guide rod

It has a larger magazine release.

Since I haven't held the Gen 4 yet, I'm not sure which grip texture I might like more.

Right now, I'll leaning toward paying the extra $50 for the Gen 4.

If you have any suggestion as to why I might consider one over the other, please let me know.

Gen3 every time for me. They made some changes to the trigger in the gen4 that make for a longer trigger reset IMO. I even traded my out the trigger in my gen4 for a gen3 and it still isn't as short of a trigger reset as my gen3. Gen4 grip is a little better, and the mag release its bigger, but for me the trigger reset was more important.

Best Glock in my opinion is the gen3 RTF (rough textured frame). They are very hard to find and bring top dollar but are worth it. Better grip than gen3 or 4 and best trigger reset. Make sure you get the one with the special slide grooves they sometimes call gills. They provide better grip on the slide. Some RTF's don't have this slide, I'd get one that does.

P.S. I use skateboard tape on my gen3 frame to help get a better grip.

Peter123, Besides my revolvers, I'm all Glock. Bought a G26, then G22, then my fav, the G19! All Gen4s. The G19 is my main carry unit. I put some Trijicon HD Night Sights on it recently, there nice. I like the Gen 4s more aggressive texture and large mag release button.

My gun guru friend has Gen 4s also. He did mention that the Gen 3 triggers were better and can swap out very easily and not costly, I think $15-20 for OEM part. I hadn't done it yet, since I do not have any issues with the stock Gen 4 trigger. Either way you can't go wrong with a Glock!

I haven't done this but i'm gonna try.
For anyone who wants a self healing target. This is pretty clever.

I've been jonesing to make my own El Presidente routine, but couldn't decide on what to use for targets. This fits the bill nicely.

Great video swap, I may have to make one of those up tonight at work. We have sheets of that material laying around and enough duct tape to build 10 787's a month.

Was there a Sig among these pistols that you tried? If so... what model?

The P226 is still pretty high on my want list.

The 40 was a sig, but I don't know the model. The 45 was a Springfield Armory, but I don't know that model either other than it was NOT a 1911.

I've held a few STI's at the local gun shows. I don't like the finish quality. The look cheap to me, call me shallow but until I read your comments I thought they were on the same level as Rock Island or similar.

I dont see that of the "gun show" lineup, they are bread and butter to keep the doors open and still of high quality. Are you sure it was an STI? The "entry level" pistols are excellent shooters. I have found the Rock Island to also be reliable. Our levels of acceptable quality does seem to differ from person to person. I should've been more specific on model choice. They offer many levels and options to suit the operators needs. SS Tac series is what I was referring to. Might wanna shoot a Tac series and see what they are all about. Not budget minded though. The STI Escort and Guardian would compare to a Kimber carry on price, and offer alot for the price IMO. CZ's are very capable firearm of high quality. Check out the 2005 NATO sidearm test, pretty interesting results,I beleive it is still the only pistol to sweep the testing.
