if I had a do over, Id probably get a 650..its only a little more and the auto index is nice

the powder checker is nice for some applications, but for stuff like 9mm more than likely a double will overflow the case.

I actually did that research yesterday and couldn't agree more. It's not that much more and probably well worth the upcharge.

I also looked into a good solid single stage. For as much as I shoot, it wouldn't be too bad to do smaller more personal batches of 50 or so at a time. More time consuming but sometimes that's not a bad thing, especially when one is first learning to reload. Only thing worse than 50 bad loads is 500-1000 of them.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the prep is still the most time consuming part right? Cleaning, sizing, trimming, etc. For those that do it, how much time is spent on each stage?

Loading for handguns is 10x easier and faster then rifle.

The Key to success and accuracy in reloading is consistency!

Loading for Rifle the steps that take the longest are:

Trim and debur: For speed and consistency the idea trimmer/deburrer is the Giraud trimmer 300-400$. I use a Forster trimmer(70$) with cutter/deburring tool to save time. Don't waste your money on a 20$ trimmer that goes on the end of a drill. The tolerances are poop and every piece of brass will come out at a different length even using it by hand. Ask me how I know..

Powder measuring: This step also takes forever because you need every drop of the powder to be perfect. I use a cheap lee powder drop(15$) to drop just below what I want and then an rcbs trickler(15$) to get it exact. The RCBS digital powder drop and scale(300$) is pretty good with some work if you want to save time.

Bullet seating:
Every bullet is different, even from the same lot. So you have to measure to the Ojive on each one. To make sure every one is perfect I back off the die, seat the bullet, measure, turn the die in, measure, maybe turn the die in some more, measure, etc etc Having a precision seating die with micrometer helps with this (60-100$)

Now if you really want to go down the rabbit hole and weigh each piece of brass and bullet etc it takes even more time.

Also unless you and your gun is capable of shooting sub moa (less then 1" at 100 yards) you can lighten up on your standards as you wont notice a difference.

check out www.accurateshooter.com for all the info there is on everything reloading and firearms.

Yeah, I'm not doing any of the above. At least not for the time being anyways. 3" grouping at 25 yards with Federal Champion is fine by me.

The local outdoor range just re-opened this week so I bought the requisite annual pass and then ordered a 3/8" jumping jack. I'm going to use up some extra material this weekend and build some wooden target stands as well.

Going to be similar to this with beefier uprights that will support a couple steel rods that I can hang some gongs and spinners off of.

The jumping jack was $32 shipped off ebay and made with 3/8" AR plating.

Gor a ruger sr9c yesterday off a friend who wants to get an xds. Hes probably shot 20 rds thru it. Seems to be a nice gun but its up for sale as I only bought it for the ammo it came with . reading about the reloading makes me want to stick to just buying ammo.

Yeah hes looking for a new one , I suggested buying one thats used but has had the update. I personally dont see him needing a gun that size when he doesnt even have a carry permit but another of our friends has one so he has to have one too.

Reloading handgun is much easier and quicker. All you do is:

Clean brass: I use a rock tumbler with water and stainless steel media (last forever and no dust!)

Resize brass: I do this in chunks while watching tv with the wife.

Load powder: Get your powder measure close so it throws charges that are +/- and you will be fine.

Seat bullet: As long as they load into the chamber you are fine if they are also +/-

Crimp bullet: can do this while also watching tv.

You can also do all of these steps at the same time with a progressive press. The longest part of the whole process is getting the dies and powder setup how you want them.

Pick up brass and repeat.

A minor update.

After I sent my trust, via email, to Silencer Shop, I've been waiting to receive my packet so that I can sign my stuff and send in my Form 4. Since I haven't received anything yet, I called them yesterday. Apparently, they need to update their video. Since all the ATF forms can be done online, I don't have to do anything else. They submitted ALL of the paperwork and everything for me. I just need to wait about another week and check with the ATF and make sure I'm in the system. The person at Silencer Shop also said the wait has dropped some due to the online processing and information not waiting to be manually input. So, now I'm hopeful for some stealth plinking in February.
Stealth plinking in February? Hows this going?

I was really just asking. I know how long these things can take, it would be nice to hear that a transaction might have gone smoothly for a law abidding citizen. Gangbangers, criminals, terroists and our Government get them in a day. EDIT: I was jabbing him a little lol.

Mine has been in since august and im not looking to get it until sometime next year. That way if it shows up sooner than that im stoked and if not its not the end of the world. Was looking forward to a squirrel hunt in silent mode though and didn't get last year.
