Just because the percieved 'norm' for the industry is to receive your hull late, without instructions and praying all the bolts fit, it doesn't make it ok. I dont see the net benefit of justifying someone's issues with the mistakes made by companies who have a horrible reputation or they are out of business. To me it perpetuates the problem.

Doing things the correctly shouldn't be some amazing feat. When it happens, it should be rewarded with more business.

For instance:
My JM BB781 arrived when I was told it would, confirmed with tracking, in good working order, with 3-4 pages of instructions. Chris gets my return business.

X2. "Everybody's doing it" isn't an excuse for my kid, why should it be an excuse for a multi-thousand dollar item?
Don't aim to fall in with everyone else's level, aim to have it done like it should be done.

Again, I am not talking about anyone specifically, but rather about the industry as a whole. It isn't hard to figure out how to write up a production schedule and giving a customer somewhat accurate time estimates rather than WAG'ing some made-up number out of the air. Industries world-wide have figured out how to estimate production schedules - it's not hard.
Next, while it may be easier to imply the customer is an idiot that should know better than to ask stupid questions, perhaps the approach with better long-term strategy would be figuring out what the most common questions are and taking a weekend to write up a simple 5-page document with helpful hints and instructions. SBT had this figured out years ago. And while you might risk that some customers won't need the instructions, the ones that do will be very thankful and are sure to comment on that guide when talking about it. Maybe record a couple videos that go over common issues and build processes? You could post that on youtube and reference a link on your web page. Ski Clinic has that figured out.
I understand that taking customer calls all day takes away from your time in the shop. This is a business, not a hobby - start having a) a secretary (fat chance), b) dedicated 'office hours', or c) some other reliable form of communication. PS: I bet having the most commonly asked questions written up in a document that you supply to the customer would take care of a lot of this stuff. But maybe answering the same question over and over with your head in a resin bucket is more fulfilling?

A lot of these aspects are being done right by a variety of vendors. If only they could get together and combine the best practices. Perhaps that will come with time as businesses mature.

Bud I feel that your Arguments are valid in every way

Regardless on the skill or not It should come with something Like tips or tricks whats a few free pointers after you make a large investment

with regards to how long it takes to deliver hulls /parts etc it falls on us far to often we say Aw he is busy or shame I might be to impatient I feel they take advantage of this whats that saying ''Give a inch, take a yard'' or something like that. they dont care really because they still get business regardless

also far to often they will answer all questions and be on you every beck and call while you owe them money...once paid up the story changes now they not chasing you its the other way around you chasing them..

think about this on hulls you pay 50% deposit and the final 50% before delivery this keeps the builders working hard because they need that extra money so they have to work for it...if you pay them upfront there is no rush they already have been paid for that job. Imagine how long a build will take if you pay upfront

best i think is annoy the crap out of them until they get so fed up they just send parts so you can bug them anymore

on a brighter side im envious of you and that sweet hull i cant wait to see some test vids keep up the great work and more updates please

Most excellent post Matt....you should start slinging parts and hulls.

You are one of the few that has it figured out even though its not to difficult to figure it out.

Guys these things take time. Only a few have been built and they honestly wemt together pretty trouble free. Its going to take time to get up to speed and crank these hulls out. The bc is an awesome ski. Idk why swapmeets didnt go together like thexrest but his panties will unbunch when he gets it on the water. Promise.... :)

Actually, until he receives the parts that should have come with his hull, he will then hit the water.

I honestly do not know if your a partner or just a buddy, but sometimes it is best to just shut up.............

Thanks Matt, you're picking up precisely what I'm putting down.

My idea, Steve should only take emails to answer questions. And set aside time each day to respond. While taking text msgs is a more personal way to respond, I think questions fall through the cracks and then customers and potential customers feel left out in the cold. I don't expect a same day response from Chris, but I KNOW he'll respond.

To be clear the parts in question do not come with the hull, its a freebie thing which can lead to slacking.I think if you aren't going to get the extra stuff to the customer in a timely manner you shouldn't offer to throw said parts in for free.

I agree about the extra stuff and not being part of the hull, But it was part of the order............ His order has not been filled. Kinda like going to McDonalds and ordering a #1 and only getting the burger and fries, you really do not want to eat without your supersize coke.

I get what you're saying, but imho those are not really free parts - they were purchased with however many dollars the hull cost. I have a Superfreak hoodie (came with my hull) that I like to joke about: my $8k hoodie.

Not quite, it would be like ordering a fry and burger and the guy said he would throw in a coke for free and took a long time to get you your coke, lol

Still looking at it the wrong way. Guy wouldn't have gotten the coke for free without paying the price for the rest of the meal. It's part of the order he paid for, whether one calls it 'free' or not. 'Free' is too often used as a crutch to excuse horrible customer service.

Were all the hulls delivered complete? Couple guys were waiting on parts,no?

I believe deftons was the only one (on the X anyway) to get all the parts with his hull. But he drove to Steve to put it together and pick it up. There may have been others I don't know about. Maybe CWAmden,

it was not part of the order he paid for though. They did not exist when he ordered, I know because I made the first ones when I was down there well after his hull was ordered. Then they were offered as add ons. I don't think they should have been offered if they weren't going to come with the ski but it was not originally in the order.

I think you need to send that hoodie to Freakrider.
