How many standup riders are in the US?

Bickering aside. There are always new people coming into the sport, plus...

If people like his footholds and hoods... they may move up to an entire hull or 900 motor. I think Jeff finally gets it with his business plan. Happy customers will buy other products. A year ago nobody would have bought from him. How the tides have changed. The sport is growing quickly. People keep upgrading their skis with the newest parts!

(example: X Metal) How many ditched their UMI steering and handlepoles for an X metal setup? Companies come and go... its the ones that keep innovating that stay around.

(Ocean Pro, Westcoast, PJS, Coffmans, all chose to sit on what they had allready made and now they are gone)

Factory Pipe might be gone next....Someone is going to build a cheaper better B Pipe and steal that market!
Same with UMI... they might leave watercraft... Who is gonna buy their pole or steering when X Metal makes a better one cheaper?

Survival of the fittest - in order to stay in business, companies will need to strive to be better. If company X was the only company to produce a widget, they could make the crappiest widget out there and still be in business. But once company Z starts making better widgets for less money...

I would be curious to see a breakdown of sales by manufacturer and by model over the last 30 or so years that they have been produced. (not by individual year but total sales per model)

What do you think the difference is between 550 sales in the 80s and 90s compared to superjet sales since 1990?

What model had the most sales?

I dont think standups are as mainstream as they were 15-20 yrs ago (how many people see your ski and say "what year is that? Oh I didnt know they still made those!)

Could sales be some type of indicator of the total amount of riders?

If I were to take a stab at it, I would say that x-h2o represents at the MOST 25% of the stand up riding population in the US.

to clarify, 25% based on registered users, not active users

roughly 1,700 registered users I believe...

so IF the X represented 25% that would mean there would be roughly 6,800 in the US

and I agree Matt, I still think 25% is high and 6,800 total in the US is low

we need someone at the DMV or somewhere like that to give us a number of stand up skis registered this year.

just from judging by the amount ive seen around where I live, I would think the national number is greater than 6,800 total skis.

You can be the BEST widget maker in the world, but that does not mean that you can successfully operate a widget-manufacturing business.

Suppose Company Z doesn't have a true grasp on overhead expenses and just pulls a number out of thin air (as long as it's cheaper than Company X's price) to determine what they sell their widgets for. A business MUST make a profit or it will fail. I am skeptical that Jeff can pay his bills, remain profitable, and sell his hoods for half of what the other guys sell theirs for---not saying that it can't work---just unlikely that it will for any duration.

this is similar to what dell does, they offer certain products that undercut everyone else' prices so much. they are essentially buying business what they loose on certain things, they will make up in other areas

dell sells a wide range of products. what they loose in pc's they make up in software and other high margin items
