I fiberglassed the tray and footholds today. I used on big piece of 1708 and a bunch of 1 inch and 3 inch 8oz tape.

Here are the final pics with the epoxy still wet. I put one piece of 1708 behind the front foothold, screwed the foothold on with ss screws, and fiberglassed with the tape over the edges. I used epoxy/cabosil/microballoons mixture to seal off the tray and to fill any voids before I started since I was out of foam. I hope it works OK.

Everything was laid up together so it should be good and strong, maybe even overkill with the 1708. I'm so glad this part is over. I'm dreading the turfing but then it's just assembly. I'm sick of this and ready to ride. All day every day I'm off is getting really old.

I cleaned all the rough places with a dremel today. I also used a 3m pinstripe remover to get the rest of the decal glue off the sides. Then I used muriatic acid to get the corrosion off my metal pole base and out of my b-pipe manifold.

Slowly but surely.

I'm dreading the turfing but then it's just assembly. I'm sick of this and ready to ride. All day every day I'm off is getting really old.

Mine is semi-ready so I'm seriously considering heading up there this weekend for a brief ride to see how it all works. I also want to get an idea how the old prop and new prop compare so that requires going out once more with the old one. Give me a call if you want an extra set of hands with the turf. I'll PM you my #.

I didn't get a lot done this weekend. I just prepped the metal parts of my pole for paint and put the polyester primer on my hull repair area and inside the motor cavity. I also sanded my wife's SN hull so I can gelcoat the bottom of hers and finish gelcoating mine at the same time. I have to work the next seven days so the ski will have to sit for a while.

I found the time last night to gelcoat my engine compartment and my wife's SN hull bottom. I got about half way through with my engine compartment when the gelcoat congealed in the bowl. Last time the gelcoat took forever to harden and this time it was too fast. I guess I'm gonna have to bring home some syringes and be very accurate with the hardener mix next time. Smaller batches too. There's another $45 down the tube for more gelcoat.

Finished all the gelcoating. Pics will be up tonight. Hull weighs in at 110 pounds on a bathroom scale with a one way valve, front foothold, and lots of 1708 biax. I'm glad I used polystyrene foam or it would have been even heavier. I figure I added 1 pound with the gelcoat....yikes! It had better hold up in the engine compartment. I'm sure after I beach it a few times it will weigh less from gelcoat getting scraped off the hull.

12 pounds less than Matt E but his is a surf tank and mine is supposed to be for flatwater with some surf riding a couple of times a year.

How's that weight? What's a stock hull weigh?

Sounds about right for a RN... If I remember right, 95-100lbs is about what the hull weighs with absolutely nothing on it (including paint). Foam, paint, footholds, reinforcements, etc. should bring you on par. What scary is that you're going to add another 175-190 lbs more to that ski before you're done.

PS - I only remember that weight because I was doing a lot of weight searching when I was building mine and wanted to compare it with SJ's.

I filled the bondline with a mixture of 3:1 epoxy, cabosil, and microballoons. I went ahead and filled the entire bondline and the areas around the bulkhead. 1708 fiberglass on the sides, nose, and the area behind the ebox. I figured I would reinforce the nose some after seeing all the Daytona carnage. I put a layer behind the ebox to reinforce the hood latch and the front foothold I'm installing. I sealed around the bulkhead with the microballoon mixture and used 1 inch tape. I wanted a good seal to make sure my foam stays dry.

The last pic is every medium clamp, chip clip, clothes pin, and any other clip I could find plus some from my father in law and another neighbor. The 1708 wouldn't stick to the hood lip without a little help.

As you can see I didn't put any color in the epoxy. I was going to use black, but I decided to paint the whole engine compartment with white gelcoat instead.

I did all the stuff in the last three posts yesterday. I started at 8:30 AM and finished at 5:00 PM. My wife is really starting to get pissy about the time I'm spending on this. I keep telling her that I just want it done before spring.

when you do the engine compartment you can only do one side at a time and have the ski tilted on the side you are doing so you have a flat surface. aka you arnt working against gravity (it always wins) .no chip clips required..and when you do the nose you put the ski strait up and down on the nose..and you could do the same for the back if you reinforce the bulkhead

I sanded and cleaned my pipe today. I painted the whole thing with the 1200 degree high heat silver paint. I tried the black on the headpipe and exhaust manifold first, but it was too flat and showed my handprints.

I sanded, primed, sanded, primed and painted the metal parts of my pole and the turnplate. I used a gloss black for those parts.

I got 50 feet of flourescent orange air compressor hose at Home Repo for 9.99. It was 7.99 for 10 feet of the clear braided hose, so this stuff was a steal.

Comming right along, the gel coat looks awsome, what size is the air hose, 3/8"? That's a smokin deal.

You thinking if comming up for the freeride, the more the marrier...
