For me in the past:

Reed stuffers
Flame arrestor "Outerwears"
SBT engines and engine work 20 years ago in 1995, not talking nowadays or distant past...
Trying WSM old skool "yellow box" pistons/rings box once in a 92 750SX LOL, what a joke those rings were!
Silly Hydro-turf cheapo hood seal
Cheap toggle switches for bilge pumps

no what you need is a pump system like those old rail cars, as you raise and lower the pole it turns a generator. That solves your night time riding problems. psh... solar panel. ;)
That's an awesome idea. How about hooking an alternator from a car to the driveshaft that would work awesome as well

How does a pump kill a midshaft and impeller ?

it comes poorly machined from the factory, eats bearings while vibrating like crazy
in my case damaged the edges of the hooker to the point it needs to go back to impros for reweld
while the vibration took out the midshaft bearings.

My props wear down due to riding in sandy salt water a ton. I have 3 props I rotate and send back to impros. They can wear down enough to cavitate and piss me off in as short as 2 months time.

You sure your midshaft wasn't from 1996 and halfway shot to begin with? I've also rebuilt my midshaft housings with @JetManiac rebuild kits. All your driveline bearings spin 6-7-8k rpm that's asking a lot if you ride like I do.

I would think your driveshaft splines would be hammered also if your pump bearings totally failed like you are saying.

Who built your pump? Were OEM yamaha bearings and seals used? Did you use the factory rubber shouldered spacing washer behind the impeller? Did you use grease or oil in the pump bearings?

I have hundreds of hours on my solas pumps....

I got one of the first undersized bearing crusher solas mags.
I had it assembled by a top notch vendor who put it together before the problems with these were well known.
I installed it, properly shimmed and lined up.
I liked the performance, bit it trashed my driveline in less than 10 hours run time.
It is now a door stop.
May send it to Watcon for machining at some point.
Or I may just throw it in the scrap metal hopper.

If you're gonna scrap it, I'll pay shipping to my house ;)

Another old mod I regret:

In 1989 when I got my first 650SX(was a mint 88'), I took off the keihin 28 carb and put on a BN44(knights of the round pump lol) and manifold. At the time I knew nothing about anything, and did not even know SBN's existed.

Wow, what a tuning nightmares on a carb with 3 needles, no jets and 50 diaphragms..hahaha
Talk about tuning daily to the weather!

BTW - Does anyone know what was the first year the SBN carb came out?
