Ever use this? It's what Color Rite wanted me to use for their clear.

I have used a similar setup before made by preval, but usually I used it for gelcoat, if the gelcoat kicks in the gun you just throw the whole mess in the trash ,no big dealio. I have a Sata jet but it's a production gun, made for shooting cars , boats etc, it puts out a lot of paint and you have to move very fast with it, for most stuff I just use a cheap Harbor Freight HVLP gravity feed gun.

Half of the bottom is , shaped ,sanded and primed. it's not perfect but the goal here is twofold, the bottom needs to be white and not look like a bear mauled the chines , so far it's one out of two. The top I fully expect to be eyepopping, I learned a long time ago that white paint , trailer bunks and decals cover a multitude of sins. I will wetsand it after the primer dries overnight and then flip it over to do the other side, my back needs a night to recover this is one huge B!tch !

I sanded it this morning and hit some spots with spot putty then resprayed the primer, seriously I could spend a week on the bottom of this ski and it would still not be right. I keep having to remind myself it's a flip ski, it just isn't my nature to do things half assed.

Here are some pics of a half assed painted ski , I say half assed because half of the ass of this ski is painted, I decided to finish this side completely then flip it and do the other side, my back and me had a conversation and decided this was the best approach and it knows best. Painted with appliance epoxy loaded into my spray gun, this paint isn't epoxy at all its enamel but if you give it about a week to dry you can sand and buff it and make it really nice, it dries hard but it takes a long time for the solvents to cure out of it.

First pic is it still in primer, second pic is painted and unmasked. I believe in the first pic you can clearly see the damage I am dealing with, I call this a success it's white and it no longer looks like a bear mauled it. I used US Composites epoxy and filler to repair the chines, it's a special filler they offer that contains various fillers, it already has some cabosil mixed in it so it maintains shape fairly well and its tough, is it tougher than stupid couch owners, probably not but we will see what we will see.

Ski is flipped over the other way I laid down some 1 1/2" foam and a couple of yoga mats where the edges hit.

First pic is after a cleanup pass with 1500 then 180 grit wet dry. Second pic is after sanding with 80 grit on a DA sander, as you can see a lot of the ugly is now gone and a lot more will disappear in the next few steps with filler and primer. I dug into those long scratches on the bottom pretty hard with the flap disc , I want enough area and tooth to make sure that filler stays put.

When I say I pulled a lot of filler some of you are wondering well what exactly is a lot, this is what I mean when I say a lot and chances are quite good that it will probably have to be pulled again after this is sanded down. The full length of all the chines has been pulled on this entire ski now.

The really bad news is that a lot of this has to be hand sanded especially the chine areas.

Did I mention thunderstorms, sometimes you just have to do what you have to do , the storm will probably blow through in about 30 minutes or less.

I managed to get it sanded, reapplied fairing compound in a few areas, sanded again and primed it in between the thundershowers, pretty nasty here right now so It will be later on in the week before I can wrap this up.

When I did my superjet I use Southern Polyurethanes Epoxy primer and clear. it is really good stuff and some is specifically made for less that paint booth conditions. They have VOC compliant products for difficult places like California and ship to your home. I used the local auto paint shop for the black and white though. It was really easy to spray and they even answered the phone Sunday morning when I was spraying and had a question.

Southern Polyurethanes is good stuff, another paint company I use is Kirker, their products are easy to use and available through Smartshoppers and Autobody tool mart

And there it is a stunning transformation, I do still have to put new reg stickers and mats on it and clean it up again but the paint is done.

I will say right now it is not perfect but keep in mind this is a flip ski. also the price on Perfect match paint has shot up now to $17.95 a can , I was able to find some in stock that was $8.62 a can which made this doable, add in the cost of the spraymax cleat at about $30.00 a can and the fact that I barely scraped by with three cans and one can of clear it is probably a a no go for any future projects.

I can buy a 3/4 gallon of Kirker single stage with the the reducer for less than $100 a gallon, single stage requires no clearcoat, a gallon of reduced single stage would spray about twenty of these skis and anything else I wanted this color.

Somewhere around the first of this thread I was working on my Seadoo 3D, as usual my projects it got pushed aside , here is the conclusion or soon to be finished parts , I have the hood and handlepole cover done I need to get more hardener and get the ski on the trailer to paint the nose piece as it is still on the ski. I decided to go with paint I already had, but hey purple is a Seadoo color right ?

More than likely I will be scuffing this one with 2000 grit and clearing over it in a few weeks, I will update with pics when it's back on the ski .

Hey WFO, looking at post #26, I am wondering what your thoughts are on using a urethane roll and tip for the bottom hull white?

I have had the engine out of my wife's X2 for a couple of years now, and I would like to flip it over on the stand, sand and fill scratches and paint the bottom white.

Also, do you have a link or a photo of the can for the filler you recommend?

It's in the link below from US composites , third down on the left, it is called SM filler but it's not in a can, it's a filler that you mix it with whatever epoxy resin that you are using and it basically spreads and works just like bondo, also if you want it much harder and tougher you can mix cabosil-aerosil in with it , the downside is mixed with cabosil that it is much tougher to sand , the more cabosil you add the tougher it becomes to sand off..

I am not quite sure what you mean by roll and tip ?
