Paint how to thread

I have the black sanded , for the most part it turned out perfect but there are a few places that had issues.

What you see in the photo is called crazing , it happens when the solvents in the paint or primer in this instance leech into the primer below it and attack it , it can be caused by the primer not being fully cured or most probably from spraying too heavily in those areas , don't let it get to you poop happens.

It is not about whether you make mistakes or not, you will , it's only about how you fix your mistakes, if this happens to you , back off of it for a few days and just let it cure, then lightly dry sand it in those spots and reshoot the primer to cover it.

On any of these spray can primers or any non catylized primer ( that means it has no hardener in it ) don't even think about putting paint on anything that has not set up at least overnight , truefully I like to give it a full 24 hrs depending on the temperature or up to a couple of days to let the solvents evaporate.

Gotta watch them spray cans........nobody labels anymore whether it's enamel or acrylic or whatever. I've even had Rust-Oleum paint react with Rust-Oleum paint!!

This isn't really a paint reaction as such , This one is probably all on me , at any rate I sanded those spots down with 220 grit back down to the gray primer and I will dust them a few times with some black primer later today.

I am impatient and had to see what it was going to look like so I decided to start spraying the mirrors and mirror bases , the green part is almost dead on the Seadoo metallic green like the hood that is on it now , the Purple is a medium to dark purple that works on this ski also.

I don't think my cell phone picks up on the shift in the paint that well but here is a mirror base I sprayed over the stock green metallic base . It went on pretty damn smooth for a spray can, so far I am impressed.

I have two 97's in right now with busted hood deflectors , you can buy them aftermarket but they don't match the Seadoo color at all , this paint is most likely his best option for those two skis.

Strangely it looks much better in person than in the photos, it's usually the opposite. I will post some better pics once the hood is back on the ski

Is that from a spray can? What kind?
I've been impressed so far with the narrow "Colorshot" spray cans that Walmart now carries. They seem to be pressurized enough to atomize pretty decent, and it lays out nice. It has a very stout odor like Dupont or PPG.

It's Duplicolor Shift green-purple , they also make a blue purple but I am betting the color shift is not as impressive, that blue purple would probably work well on Yamahas , it's Lacquer just like the Perfect match series colors but $17.95 for a much bigger can, I got a $10.00 rebate from Oreillys so two cans for $25.00 .

I shop every parts store in town except for Napa , they are just ridiculous,. you really have to as they don't stock a lot , Advance had one can of black primer , I needed two so I got the other one from Carquest yesterday , neither had Color shift so that came from Oreillys ..

I was able to get a charge account at Carquest , you can go online at Advance to spend your perks rebate bucks along with online discounts , then pick it up at Advance or Carquest if Advance doesn't have it in stock , the website checks both stores inventory.

I have to say that am fairly impressed with this black Rustoleum primer , It goes on smooth and dries quickly to a really hard finish that sands out nicely, $13.00 a can $3.00 off of that if you buy two at Advance auto. Like I said earlier ignore the directions on the can and give it plenty of time to dry, at least overnight or all day sitting out in the direct sun.

I sanded to 600 grit because this lacquer paint I am using will not fill even the slightest imperfection, it will look like it does but it will shrink when it cures and is the surface isn't perfect it will show.

I sprayed the small parts first for this reason, to get all the bugs worked out , the Shift paint will spray over any color but one of the mirrors had a few primer spots showing and it shows up in the finish as light spots , while this black primer makes an excellent base you do have to make sure no grey primer peeks through anywhere or you will have spots in your finish.

The main culprits here are the edges of the hood and sharp corners which of course less paint sticks to because paint hits the edge and deflects , So I do still have a few small areas to reshoot with black primer then I will let it dry , hit it very lightly with 600 grit and it will be good to go.

So far I have spent about $60.00 in materials on this project , not to shabby considering it will completely change the looks of the ski .

Check Home Depot too. A lot of times their Rust-Oleum prices are cheaper than Walmart. Next time you need a plain color with no pearl or metallic try that Colorshot stuff. I was thinking that might have been Duplicator, I've always liked their stuff as well.

It's not perfection just yet but most of the issues are spray can issues, it had a couple of dark spots and one section that was lighter that almost looked like paint blush , being lacquer you just sand between coats and shoot another coat on top of it, lacquer does not build in layers like enamel or Polyurethane does , each layer of lacquer melts into the existing layers so you can reshoot at any time.

Back in the old days before polyurethane became the norm, show cars were painted with lacquer and hand sanded between coats, there might be 20-40 layers of lacquer applied then it was cut and buffed for that show car shine , that's where the expression rubbed and loved came from..

The fix here is simple I sanded it with 1500 grit this morning and I will dump a can of Duplicolor Shift into the Sata jet and give it a final coat , you shoot it at a fairly high pressure and the Sata jet atomizes like crazy and should even out the finish .

This photo clearly shows the color shifting effect of the paint, I might get jiggy and spray a whole ski with this stuff, you never know..

I have been messing with this colorshift paint some more and there is a fairly steep learning curve on this paint , if you paint over black primer it is one color, more of a medium green medium purple pretty close to Seadoo OEM green metallic ,but if you paint over a black basecoat it is a much darker color .

One more thing , spray it out of the can it came in, I loaded the last batch into my paint gun, it did not like that at all , it sprays much better out of the can it came in..

I have a couple of touchups to do then I will wetsand it and bury it under Spraymax glamour clear and put it on the ski.

Just think of it as me making mistakes so you don't have to lol.

Thanks for that. The paint didn't like sprayed out of the gun because of how thin it was. Maybe if you used a detail gun and turned the pressure down to 10psi it MIGHT have worked. I've had a few custom color cans mixed up at the local paint store through the years and they told me it mixes MUCH MUCH thinner to spray from a can.

Don't get me wrong the Satajet atomizes like crazy but yes a detail gun would probably work better for this, these cans spray really well for spray paint but I guess at $18.00 a can they probably should.

This is the hood deflector , gauge cover whatever you want to call it , somebody started producing them out of flexible plastic and they are fairy cheap but the color is god awful and matches nothing so I scuffed it with 400 grit applied Bulldog adhesion promoter and hit it with Universal black lacquer base then painted it with Colorshift.

It is so shiny and glossy it is hard to take a picture of, it picks up reflections off of everything around it I had to put it out in the middle of the yard and still it picked up the flash so the second pic is without the flash , the link is what I started with and yes it is terrible stock , the nice thing is these deflectors is they are a flexible plastic like a dirt bike fender they shouldn't crack , break or break off the mounting tabs everytime you touch them ..

BTW if you use the black primer as a base it is almost an identical match to the stock Seadoo greEn on the 96 -97 GTX If you don't mind the colorshift .

Just in case you are wondering the ski I sold last year is back, they didn't winterize it, left it half full of water and left the battery hooked up , I have it going again after cleaning the contacts on the start switch and changing the plugs , l am waiting on the batteries to get here to wrap it up.

I am pretty sure this thing hasn't seen a cover since I sold it , you will notice that while it's at my place it has a cover on it , it makes life much easier for me to keep them covered.

So here is what it looks like a year later after baking in the sun for a year, the paint seems to hold up just fine. This one is Duplicolor perfect match with Spraymax clear on top.

I masked around those decal's then cleared over everything . ,I love me some green skis !

This thread is making me reconsider my plan to gel coat my entire hull. If I want just a gloss white, is there a good reason NOT to gel coat my hull? I want a hard wearing finish I won't have to retouch in a few years.

You can gelcoat it but you will have to spray the entire ski down with polyester primer if you don't the gelcoat will never stick to the hull and it's going to be time consuming and expensive the Slick sand alone will cost you $60.00 + per quart , gelcoat even looking at your cheapest option which is US composites is around $75.00 a gallon, I don't know if you have messed with gelcoat before but spraying it is just the first step, there will be an assload of sanding and buffing if you choose to go that route.

Something like AWLGRIP paint is probably going to be your best bet, it's also going to be ridiculously expensive .

So this is the money shot , I had to take it early this morning to reduce the suns glare , but the results are stunning and it's not even clearcoated yet, buried under clear I will look even better .

I ended up scuffing with 400 grit and respraying the whole hood with Perfect match Universal black as a base , a few minutes later I sprayed the Colorshift , I am using Spraymax glamour clearcoat, I will give it a day to dry completely then wet sand with 1000 grit and clearcoat everything .

Since the paint is Lacquer and the clear is catalyzed polyurethane it has to be scuffed to get it to stick , it doesn't need much but it does need something to get it to stick , the two paints won't chemically interlock like a urethane base and a urethane clear will but if you will look back at post # 76 you will see it works quite well, the proof is in the pudding as they say.
