I saw Waze came out with a $30 doorbell camera with a resolution of 2048 x 1536 which is crazy for the price. Probably worthless at night even though it clams 'night vision' . I still love my reolink setup; the shape of my entryway prevents me getting a camera on the doorstep to see package dropoffs. Another bonus was no monthly subscription required like the other doorbell brands as memory is internal. For $30 I took the gamble and on the pre-order list. https://wyze.com/wyze-doorbell.html#pageDetails

The new Reolink AI is awesome and after playing with one cam for a month, I ordered another pair of them to swap out my driveway cams. If you were on the fence, it's time to jump in! Once you go AI, you will never go back!

The AI still isn't perfect but each firmware update further refines it. Long story short, the cam can differentiate between random motion events, vehicles and people so it's able to filter out the unwanted detections, (like insects, spiderwebs and car headlights across the lawn), and only email you the ones you want to see. I typically don't turn on email alerts for any of my cams due to the amount of false triggers and now have 3 cameras facing the road activated. This closes a big gap in our detection level as previously I would record 24/7 and only review footage if I was made aware of an event by my neighbors.

I plan to upgrade both my doorway cams as well once the dome versions are released. We are at the end of a long street and so I get a false trigger every single time a car comes down our street at night so I'm hoping this reduces those to a minimum. If it's like the other cams, the false alarms went from 90% down to less than 15% and they haven't missed a thing yet.

I reached out to my Reolink contact regarding the glitches in their first release of the AI firmware and managed to get myself back on their Beta testing program.

I am currently in the possession of, and testing, 2 new beta cams: The Argus 2E and the RLC-1220A, their new 12MP Dome camera.

So far the 12MP is not promising but with mine and other's feedbacks, they will adapt and refine it before it comes to market. I was not impressed with the optics or the narrow field of view for such a high resolution image so I gave it a fail. The 8MP cams have a FOV of 87deg and the 12MP is a dismal 67deg.

There's no word on the release date for the 12MP bullet cam yet. I suspect they will need to source a new internal camera module with a wider FOV before either of these 12MP cams see production.

The Argus 2E I'm testing is a wire free, rechargeable 1080P Wi-Fi cam with PIR, Time-Lapse, 2-way audio and even has an optional solar panel for continuous charging. I mounted mine on a stainless spike and have been moving it around my yard playing with the Time Lapse feature. I've captured quite a few sunsets, a full days horizon from sunrise to sunset, a few turtle feedings and tried to get a shot of our roses or Sago Palms blossoming but it's the wrong season for those events. I don't have much use for these cams since I have 19 fixed IP cams already but it's nice and portable so it can be tasked with random jobs around the house, like watching the other end of a conduit to see if my fish tape has emerged yet. :p

The next cam they will be testing is the 8MP Dome, (RLC-822A) with 3x optical zoom and then early next year the 8MP Outdoor PTZ, (RLC-823A). The 5MP cams with 3x zoom are impressive so I can't wait for the 8MP versions. I have 2 of the RLC-423 5MP PTZ's that will be getting upgraded as soon as the higher res versions are available.

It's looking like most, if not all IP camera platforms will be getting the new AI feature as well as a new built-in Time lapse feature. The TM feature is built in to the camera itself and won't work through the NVR but it's an easy work around by simply plugging the cam into your network instead of the NVR. I've been playing with the Argus 2E doing captures and while the resolution isn't as high as the IP cameras, the file size is much more manageable and the captures are just as impressive. If you have ever played around and set up an FTP server to use the previous time lapse capture, you will be amazed and appreciative at the simplicity of the new interface.

Bought my first new gaming pc since 2010, got everything transferred over and setup etc. But damn thing would beep randomly like the cpu was over heating. After a week of doing all kinds of stress tests and going through bios settings etc I just figured out it is the motion detection of the reolink causing the system beep.

Anyone in the market for a camera system? I am selling off a pair of the 4K 8ch Reolink NVR's.
They were just purchased last year but their hardware is not compatible with the latest Reolink AI cameras.
I'm asking $125 each plus actual cost of shipping. Both are hardware version H3MB16 and come with new 2TB HDD's.

EDIT: I took both to work so these are no longer available.

What is the 12 or 16 channel AI compatible NVR? Or do you recommend running two separate 8 channel NVRs?

I only ran 2 8CH NVR’s because they didn’t release a 4K compatible 16ch for almost a year.

It turns out they were redesigning the 16Ch platform to handle 4K and a few new tricks like the AI and 12MP cams that recently released.

If you order either the 8 or 16Ch unit today from Reolink, you will get the latest and greatest hardware rev that will work with all cams.

Of which system? Also, Facebook and most forums autosize the pics so I am not sure how accurate of an image I could ever post.

I am not impressed with the 12MP cams. They may have increased resolution but only a 67 deg FOV so you see less. Ideal for long range, mountain scenery and such but the 8MP has a more desirable 87deg FOV for around the house.

Yes, both the 8 and 12MP cams are available in AI. Just check the hardware version of your NVR to ensure that your model is capable of displaying all the features. The older NVR’s will still record video from the cameras, you just won’t be able to filter the motion alerts by motion, person or vehicle.

Also, the newer firmware NVR’s have an improved UI, (user interface). It takes some getting used to.

OCD, please post up the model no. NVR and AI cameras you buy for your next generation set up. I am ready to buy, but want to follow your lead. Thanks for doing this.

We switched to Apple because I am disgusted with Google.

I want to switch to Reolink because Nest is owned by Google.

Pretty simple really, just depends on how big you wanna go.
Start with either an 8CH or 16CH NVR.
*I typically suggest the 16CH unit as I feel that 8 cameras is not enough for full coverage on a house. Plus, it can fit 2 HDD's inside the case for added storage capacity.
** 8TB of storage lets me record all 16 cameras 24/7 with 9 days of history.

My current camera of choice comes in two formats, Dome or Bullet; Specs are the same so choose based on which looks better or will suit your mounting area better.
4K, 8MP Bullet with AI: https://reolink.com/product/rlc-810a/
4K, 8MP Dome with AI: https://reolink.com/product/rlc-820a/
* I have the domes mounted in my entrances and then bullets everywhere else.

That's a solid starter kit right there and you can supplement as needed with specialized cams.
If you need to reach an area further from your house, both the 4K cams I linked are soon to be available in models with an optical zoom. The Dome gets a 3x zoom and the Bullet gets a 5x.
I have received a beta model of the dome already and the bullet version is in the mail. The 3x zoom is decent and I assume the 5x will be that much better.

I like to look around our pond so am anxiously awaiting the release of the updated Outdoor PTZ. I have the 5MP version on the back of the house now but there are rumors of an 8MP version with 5x zoom to be released in the first quarter of 2021.

Google absolutely ruined Nest customer service. I have a ton of nest products in the house and I’m ready to pile them all up in the driveway and light them on fire out of spite to nest’s(read: googles) new customer service and warranty system.

I needed to warranty an indoor camera and a thermostat. They sent me a new thermostat, no return label or RMA number for the broken one since thanksgiving!!! Charged me for the replacement.

The indoor camera we sent back, have been 6 months without one. They sent an outdoor camera instead, just terrible communication between branches of their customer service it’s very frustrating because I like the product, google just got their grimy paws on it and effed it up.

For all you WiFi guys, the latest Reolink cams are now offering dual band radios with improved signal. I'm typically not a fan but they sent me some units to test that actually aren't half bad. They are also moving into the 4MP range which is so much better than 1080P, AND, they have AI smart detection on board!
Check out the Argus 3 Pro; https://reolink.com/reolink-trial/?id=7&area_id=1
And the E1 Outdoor; https://reolink.com/reolink-trial/?id=10&area_id=1

We have a 4-5ft gator in our pond lately so I welded up a special mount yesterday that I can move around the pond. The Argus 3 Pro comes with a solar panel to keep it charged up and I am able to pick up a signal from across the pond and 2 houses down. Previous models wouldn't pick up a signal 50ft from the house, much less 250'.
For those looking for a "Mailbox" cam at the end of the driveway, this might be your answer. It has a built-in floodlight, siren and two-way audio so you can scare the chit out of your mail person.

I was really hoping to post up some close-up gator pics but the temps dropped and he's gone back into hiding. :(
I pulled this one with my cheapo Nikon. He keeps returning to the same spot so the new cam is spiked into the bank about 4ft from his favorite spot.

It must be an automation thing. Alexa has been giving us fits the past couple months and has stopped talking to our ADT Pulse system as of Jan 6th. ADT pushed a firmware update that broke the ability to connect to any remote hubs, effectively neutering the bulk of all my home automations with Z-Wave technology. I spent the better part of last weekend programming everything over to a Hubitat Elevation hub which will be nicer in the long run as it has way more features and much better integration. Plus I'm not dependent on any other services now either.

I like the idea of privacy without a service dependent cloud storage like Goggle/Nest where we likely give all our privacy up and they likely own the videos etc. to sell to the National Security Administration (they have not been spying on us, they have been buying surveilance from the Hi Tech companies).

But it looks like Hubitat does not do cameras? Correct?
