Smoofers' Super Chicken Build (Mostly Complete)

Are you making any upgrades to the rear air inlet grate? We just picked one up a few weeks ago, its stripped down and being sanded now to prep for paint.

I'm debating on whether or not to put it back in... I know it would provide some sound suppression and keep water from sloshing in through that opening. At the same time though, once I glue it in it will be way more permanent than it originally was.

Edit - I was talking about the baffle. You were probably talking about the grate itself. I really wish I could have one in blue anodized aluminum... But that would be custom and probably expensive. For now, I'm probably just going to clean up the grate and paint it black...

Just extra pics of stuff I've worked on. The Coffman's head pipe had the crankcase drain-knob bracket sticking off the side. I cut it off and ground the area smooth to make it disappear. Didn't need it since I tapped and plugged the cases where the drain holes were. I think it looks cleaner.

Other blasted and painted parts. Exhaust parts were painted with VHT 500deg primer and paint. Non exhaust parts were painted with VHT epoxy paint.

Looks good, is that a zxi waterbox you are running? I read somewhere that the coffman's waterbox won't fit in the SC, is that what you ran into?

The waterbox that came with the pipe I got (coffmans for a 750ss) definitely wouldn't fit in the SC. I ended up using a Sea Doo waterbox for its size and shape and (low) cost. I'm pretty sure it's from an old 580/650/720.

Not sure which coffmans pipe you have, but I have a coffmans pipe/waterbox from a 750ss and the waterbox fits perfectly just like stock. However, I had to cut the chamber down about an inch to get that to fit.

The waterbox that came with my pipe definitely wouldn't fit where the stock one did.... If you look at posts #10 & 12 in this thread you can see the mock up and how tight of a squeeze the pipe is.

Yea, Im running the same pipe, but mine I sectioned in the middle and took out an inch, and run a coupler on the chamber.

Spent way too long looking for some decent anodized aluminum grab handles. I wasn't going to use the originals since they looked like poop and I had filled in the original mounting holes. Ended up finding these from raptoworx.com, they were what I had envisioned all along. Made some pads out of rubber sheet I had laying around that I make pressure test block off plates with. I needed the pads because the hull is curved where the handles would go and they're made to mount to a flat surface. Worked out pretty well.

I also was kicking myself for not replacing the reeds when I originally built the motor. The more I thought about it the more I knew they'd fail on me just out of spite. So I ordered some new reeds from JetManiac and some gaskets from superjett and swapped them in. Motor was pressure tested again and all was good. I installed the pump (pics lacking, sorry) and came to the conclusion that old school Kawasaki pump technology sucks. I probably used a half tube of silicone between the pump, intake grate and ride plate. Hopefully I don't have to remove any of them any time soon. Motor was then dropped in and bolted down.

The huge styrofoam pad that supports the fuel tank has been driving me crazy. It was covered in oil, stained and nasty. I don't have a good pic of the before, but in one of my mock-ups before paint you can see part of it by the carrier bearing. I wanted to paint it but was worried any paint I used would melt the foam. Washing it in dish soap didn't help and it even still left oil stains on the white paint inside the hull. So I tried white Plasti-Dip. Turned out pretty good and now looks like factory new foam. I cut off the already flaky and super oil soaked corner (front right of the first photo) to clean the shape up a bit more. Pardon the messy work bench.

Great idea!

Quick update, got the tank in. With the motor already in place it was about 5 times more difficult than a superjet fuel tank. The fuel pickup looked too terrible to leave as is so I sandblasted it and painted it.
