Surfriding Speed and Style Surf Competition 2013 Daytona Freeride

My thought on the basics...Surf riding is all about being SMOOTH & FLUID....with whatever maneuver you try to pull off. MOST of the time, excessive SPEED can get you into trouble (make you look spastic on recovery and crash). I personally DON'T ride fast in Daytona because of the TRAFFIC. It isn't a RACE out there...or is it? Where's the buoys? You can still make LOTS of SPRAY even while riding/ carving slow on a wave...that's technique. (don't get me wrong, I like to ride fast too, just not in the crowded surf)...(ok dock me -2 points).

This surf comp thing is a good idea for the most part, and will be tough to judge fairly. Especially if there are only certain allowable tricks on the "menu" that will given + or - points for. But what the heck...it's supposed to be fun right?

Let's not forget Lots of Pix & Video!!!

I think you ride faster than you think you do....

never see frankie trolling for waves......you always keep the movement and flow going

there is WAY too much in the way of semantics in this thread

if anyoine remembers TC shredding the 08 SJ up and down the beach a couple of years ago THAT is the type of riding that will win this event

He rides slowly. They (mafia) flow with grace, charging with sudden power when necessary. Same can be said for Tomski, LBE, as well as so many others…much the pleasure to watch and take photos of indeed. Speed is a matter of individual style, and dictating someone's style for them is rather strange.

I think TC rode the SJ much faster and with more style than the silly little XFR Rickter. He got more air off the small stuff with the XFR, but that's about it

obviously is someone is riding fast and falling off every turn "speed" won't help. The faster and more fluid you ride the more points you will get. I do not want people thinking this is some kind of race. Style and execution will be the main focus, while speed will be judged w/ the realm of your style. I just do not want to see people putting around a 3mph looking for the next wave. You need to make it interesting for the crowd.

I think Dan should try it at Wavedaze

that's waaaaaay too soon. Not ready for primetime at all. We will work this out and come up with solid rules. Also, this needs several test runs to get timing and stuff like that right. I will get some guys here in Florida (we got plenty) and we'll get it right. I'll start a thread about possible dates to sit down and discuss then come up w/ dates for a mock run.

You know as well as me that speed can be your enemy as well as your friend when working waves.

Style...I can deal with. Fast does not make it good.

when the waves are crap you can make it much more interesting if u keep your speed up and find little waves to double to keep the flow going...if its sloppy the only way is to be on the gas cause it sucks riding slow in a washing machine and you cant get a rythym going..

watkins had an itchy trigger finger as well...

It says clearly that jumping is not allowed unless it is a surf move, meaning surfing inspired trick. reentry, floater, br-reentry. flip reentry. The trick has to be back toward the beach.

I would even eliminate the br-reentry and the bf-reentry also, these are air manuvers. Another advantage for a surf only contest like this is that a limited SuperJet, FX-1 or even a SXR would be able to compete in this format. Having to drop $20k+ on a ski just to be competative kills the sport

that does makes sense since only 3 guys can do all that crap anyway. Thanks for the input. Got off track w/ that idea..

oy....I have so lost interest in this entire concept and thread

too much f8cking clutter and NONsense

Mmmmm....I forgot what I was going to say...

Oh yea...mmmmm (distracted w/ avatar)....But that's ok.

On another note, this surf riding thing is mostly dictated by the wave you are on or about to hit, that's the beauty of it. Working out the bugs here with this event thing is stressing some folks out, but we'll get through this...we always do. It will be good to come to some sort of agreement...like SHUT UP AND RIDE!

Here's an idea, keep it simple. If it is to be a "SURF" event, treat it like one... Just go out there and ride surf. Add points, Subtract points...whatever. Have FUN!!

:)skull2:I can't believe I am posting in a "drama" thread :skull2:)

Why not let the crowd be the judge? Hand out ballots and vote for a rider number? Just brainstorming...

Or even let the competitors judge each other. Everyone competing throws $20 in a pot. If you're not competeing, you're judging. If you get eliminated then you still judge. The winner gets 50% of the pot and 2nd and 3rd both get 25% of the pot. Its all for fun anyways

hhh
Why not give a section or specified distance and a number of passes back and forth like laps. And do 2-3 runs or heats for each rider This would add some tolerance to the waves and give each rider a more even field. Would also aid in flow and speed I think. Can start one rider at one end while the other finish a last pass and so forth. If done right could be a seamless string of badass riding and give a larger spectator field as well.

Mafia crew must go in order first to establish the standard for judging :)
