Surfriding Speed and Style Surf Competition 2013 Daytona Freeride

Bummer, but I can see the reasoning due to early days of the competition. Maybe we can get a shot in future years? I like idea in general, I think it will allow recognition for riders who have a different but expert skill set that does not receive a lot of publicity apart from individual respect.

Someone mentioned leaving the decisions of who should score what depending on skill/years riding and setup. I think if you pick some neutral party seasoned riders who love the sport, provide them with each ridrs info on skill/years riding and the setup being used, they will recognize who the true winner is no matter what ski is being ridden.

I like that idea a lot

Its a competition, you will know its a competition, and you will know who/what youre riding against. Equipment shouldnt be a factor at all. If you dont feel you can ride well enough to compete, then dont compete. no excuses here, the kind of riding that will be judged takes skill and experience no matter what hull youre on so it will be easy to judge fairly, regardless of equipment.

well that took me too long to post. there was a page of posts added when i was typing this out. now i look like im late the party. haha....

Ok, your voices were heard. No deductions for anything and run what you brung. I am not married to any of these ideas, I am simply throwing out questions.

good man, that will save you a ton of headache as well..

no pro cards obviously..

Perhaps use past winners of sickest trick for judge options? TC def needs to be there with ya...maybe Malone??

I do want TC to judge it, Scott Watkins would be great too.

I almost think we need to do some type of pre-qualification for this. I don't want to see some guy out there flailing around for 6 min just cause he wants to be in a comp. Or should I make this invite only?

Nick if you really want to showcase rider talent, the skis should be identically prepared as they do in some forms of racing, perhaps even bone stock skis on loan from a local dealer....count me in.

You sure will have to...

that would be impossible... and it would not showcase riders talents since they would be on boats they are not used to....

Normal peeps riding their skis doing what they do in the surf. Open class surf style.

1. Pros
2. Amateurs
3. Open to all, with limited #'s in heats.

Start with a.m. glass. Tally the votes throughout the day, Evening glass off for finals and presentation at dinner.

SO FAR CHANGE SUCKS!!!!!!
Nick to make it easier on yourself, judges and everyone spectating. I like the invite method. U my friend kno who all would make for a entertaining show.

And keep the judging simple. Don't over complicate it. Like said before. The real winner will shine!

ok, say we start w/ 20 positions, 6 min heats, head to head. That is a 1 hour run time + cue time and switch over time, add another hour+. We can leave 4 slots open for qualifying. The way you will qualify is either send a vid to me or maybe we can do a qualifying by just letting the rider go out the friday before and do a quick 6 min run and we pick the 4 that way.

Also, I want to rent a huge clock that can be seen from the water, or at least from the edge of the water, a bull horn, and have someone keeping track of times and keeping it flowing. (whip cracker)

I want this to be clear, it's not a comp for people who can't BR or BF, this is a comp for the best surfriders we can find. Please if you are not a seasoned surfrider then please keep it on the beach for this one. Not trying to be a jerk, but I want a very high level of riding for this. Maybe if this grows into something bigger I will do a second class for riders w/ a lesser skill set.

I agree that there should be some kind of qualifying to enter this competition. Riders should be comfortable reading waves, slashing, re-entries, keeping the flow going, etc. Shouldn't be another kind of "pros only" event though either. I'd like to see some new riders too. Riders that might not care much for flips or rolls, but love to surf ride and are great at it.

like this idea especially on 1-2 foot days where rolling and backflipping is kind of hard on lightly modded skis. i also think they should judge the freestyle comps not only on flips and rolls but on wave riding style as well.

plus a lot of people put down surf riding bc it looks easy, do it for a solid 6 minutes straight and you might feel different about it. plus add to that making it flow with style and it gets a lot more challenging. count me in ima give the fx mafia a run for their money lol they got some surf riding skills ill give it to them for sure

I hate to suggest it but charging a registration fee ( with a purse prize as the reward) would probably do away with any non-serious surf rider who might not have the skill to enter. I think that also the fact that the beach will be full of spectators will divert those without master surf skills from going out and getting whipped up on.

I base this on seeing the amount of people entering a sickest trick or other skill based comps at surf rides, there always seems to be a smaller group that steps up when it's a true skills competition.

Thoughts?
