Custom/Hybrid Superfreak Review - Ride, Buying Experience, Quality

ah your the one that ruined my day,lol just kidding. I saw it come in hauling ass onto the beach with no rider and the pole danglin off to the side and was like, ohhh fantastic! That was lucas surf ski -2 full carbon,it was gunmetal gray, not really black. The one you said was orange and black was was red and black with a carbon pole, maybe you guys have diff colors in UK lol.that was Tims personal ski, super short and light, not my taste at all for surf. Im not sure what length or weight coreys ski was,I saw it but didnt ride it,What was specifically better about it than the gray ski to you in the surf?

When I say rail a turn im talking about really leaning into a turn and bringing the bars close to the water and almost have your ass touch the water on back side surf stance turns. I wrenched on the pole leaned hard had all my weight on the inside foot of the turn, and that hull would not rail a corner at all, I wasnt having issue with it sliding out so much. It was just as soon as you lean it the back bond rail would grab the water and push the ski back up straight?

while you were watching it haul ass up the beach i was doggie paddling in hoping the ski didnt take anyone out !!!!!!! cut my chin open pretty good aswell damn those superfreak chin pads lol . maybe the bump explains my lack of colour consept ! hard to recal now but i just felt at home on it it leaned over nice disnt feel flat like some am skis when turning . hope this isnt an insult but it felt like an sj but better ! poped off waves nice ,holds felt comfortable. maybe the way it was set up just happened to suit me . tbh the grey one felt good to just a little slower to react to your imput very stable unlike tems one . didnt get long on it because of the ghost rider beach trick i did lol .

Ski turns on a dime. You can put the ski in a critical point on a wave and have the freedom of going anywhere you want to. Surfing inspired, this hull is perfect for surf riders who truly want to throw down big slashes and rail a ski on a wave. I didn't spend too much time on it because I knew I would be dissatisfied with my own my ski.

For the first time ever, I saw a rider who saw every available pocket of lip before it closed down and hit every single section. Everything was last second and Berky hit it everytime.

Superjets are great. The superfreak just has a bit more edge in a few areas.

If I ever get an aftermarket hull, its the superfreak. No second thoughts.

No matter what I say, I won't be able to describe the full potential of this hull. Its really hard to say anything about a masterpiece. Tem did an amazing job and I just can't say enough about it. I don't think anyone else that rode the ski this last weekend can disagree with me.

In addition, one of the guys rode it for a little bit and was sold. He bought a carbon superfreak from Berky shortly after.

Thanks for the review!

It sounds like it rips in the surf and performs well in the flat for tricks but I want to know is can you actually carve this thing. I would love to take one on a creek ride in NJ and put it through it's paces.

I love my SJ but this one has had me interested since it first came out. There is just no one in the area with one to try for a weekend.

What do you mean by "Carve?"

You can sit your ass in the water, pull the trigger and stay hooked up.

Its super easy to ride. Everyone at Pismo was comfortable.

I rode Tricky's Badass and it went anywhere I wanted it to. His pole was really short but yes, you can carve on it.

I think "carving" is such a subjective term... Are we talking carving like an SXR / '08+ SJ - OR - are we talking carving like a tubbied pre-08 SJ? Are we talking dipping an elbow in the water like a 550 or an upright stance in the turn without sliding, or is this carving on the flats or on a wave face? Carving around a buoy? So many ways to "carve"

All that being said... The Superfreak just turns beautifully and does whatever you want it to. Absolutely the most fun hull I have ever ridden. I would say it's "carving" abilities are most similar to a pre-'08 tubbied SJ, but a little flatter. IMO it does not carve like an SXR. It's too freakin' light to carve like that! You can snap a quick turn when you want or slide it when you want.

Also, this hull is so versatile and adjustable - I would venture to guess that a heavy-built glass freak @ full length with straight forward SJ running gear (straight nozzle, no trim, long plate, longer pole) would out-ride and out-carve the beloved tubbied SJ! - and be far more stable and light to boot! Neither of the ones I rode at Pismo were set up like that, quite the opposite actually, and I still loved the handling.

The only semi-negative comment I heard was from Mark Gomez - he said he thought it was not as good at speed as his SJ. But bear in mind that the 2 freaks there were setup to turn and flip extremely quick. One was shortened a bit (Lucas' glass surf freak @ ~ -1.5”) and the other had extra rocker + upward trim (Tem's). I think if one was setup as I described above "westcoast style", Mark might have liked it better. Also worth noting is that Mark flat rips it up all the time out there!!! Looks like he going WFO all the time and likes to race in the surf too. So i can understand why those particular freaks were not up to par for that.
***Mark please chime in with your comments, hopefully I interpreted your opinion of it correctly, if not please correct me.***

I think its been said before, but this hull is like cheating! I love it.

The other interesting thing to note is that this is not a super-short sawed-off looking hull. Its really alot longer than I expected. im not talking about the length of the bottom - but the overall ski. Sitting next to my Octane, they are surprisingly similar in overall length. i expected it to look like it would fit inside an Octane! - not the case. This is a good sized ski that handles like something much shorter.

First pic is deceptive, but in the next ones you can see the difference in length. Back edges are even.

Oh yeah, I’m that guy.

It's the ultimate rec ski, super versatile, potential to be a flat-water weapon or an incredible surf ski.... or somewhere in-between like I'm going for. Rides like a dream, not nose-high, stable and light...

Besides all that, Tem and Nancy are the nicest people you will ever meet. So fortunate that I was able to meet and hang out with them in Pismo. They build a great product.

I could go on and on, but I'll shut up for now! :tapedshut:

Ive rode 4 freaks total 3 in flats and 1 in the surf,My impression was they were purpose built flatwater freestyle boats, that were awesome for freestyle, turned very flat, super short poles, skis were only comfortable when riding nose high, when ya gased them and they flattened out,you were leaning over and super uncomfortable for me.but they were all badass type hulls, made for flats, they are like -5 or something? I only got to ride a carbon full length surf model in flats.Someone broke the pole before I could get a surf ride on it in tona. In flats the surf hull would not rail a turn at all for me,it felt SUPER stable though all most like a gyroscope effect,Tim said the back of the bond rail was rockered and a few inches lower than the sj. It seemed to me when you tried to rail carve a turn it would force you back straight up. I think id like the bond rail a bit higher in the back, believe he said that was possible to do.

Ride plates and nozzles make a HUGE difference on these skis. I am pretty sure all of the skis you rode had the nozzle with 4 degrees build in trim. They would carve a turn much better with a straight nozzle.

Did u ride the glass or carbon freak?

I rode your ski Lucas. The pole weight destroyed my back but other than that it was great. I loved the rockered red one when playing on the waves, but I think yours is probably a better all around ski.

The reviews were quite different than Daytona. A lot of people were loving the rockered hull.

I'm glad you like it, yeah I know that RRP pole is way too heavy, I will put a spring on it, I'm just been so lazy
