Hardly trivial but here goes;
When I first moved down to the US a little over 7 years ago, the CDN/USD exchange rate was between 28-32% so I lost $0.30/dollar on everything. About a month after I moved my last penny down, the dollars evened up and even went in favor of the Canadian dollar for awhile. Fast forward to today and my parents are trying to send me some money from my grandfather's estate and finding the exchange rate has just hit the 30% range again.
We thought we would just use Paypal as they allow gifts between family members with no fees but my mother sent me $100 for my birthday that ended up costing her $144. Turns out the no fees is only in country and does not apply to international transactions. So, Paypal would cost me the daily exchange rate plus another 12%.
We thought we'd just add the funds to my Canadian holdings but are finding that I am not allowed to contribute any money as long as I reside outside the US.
