Hardly trivial but here goes;

When I first moved down to the US a little over 7 years ago, the CDN/USD exchange rate was between 28-32% so I lost $0.30/dollar on everything. About a month after I moved my last penny down, the dollars evened up and even went in favor of the Canadian dollar for awhile. Fast forward to today and my parents are trying to send me some money from my grandfather's estate and finding the exchange rate has just hit the 30% range again.

We thought we would just use Paypal as they allow gifts between family members with no fees but my mother sent me $100 for my birthday that ended up costing her $144. Turns out the no fees is only in country and does not apply to international transactions. So, Paypal would cost me the daily exchange rate plus another 12%.

We thought we'd just add the funds to my Canadian holdings but are finding that I am not allowed to contribute any money as long as I reside outside the US.

ROFLMAO.............. I dont mind snow. I love snow............ Problem is, when it snows here, it turns to mush. and usually before it does that, it freezes. Have you ever been around frozen snow? I am talking about how it does here in the south. Literally everything freezes over. You do not drive in this mess. And if your caught in it. It is really dangerous and most do not know how to drive in it.

That's pretty much what it's like in Texas. Except it usually sleets here instead of snow. So you get little icy ball bearings (which isn't too bad to drive on), or you get melted icy ball bearings that re-freezes into ice/ black ice.

We've had actual snow here in the past 3-4 years, El Nino I guess... and we don't know how to react as a populace. At least the local Dept of Transportation has gotten more equipment to prep and control the problem.

There, fixed it for ya.

I was going to have a couple of these printed but the wife said she wouldn't Be around me while wearing something that offensive. I asked my buddies and they also thought it was too much. Yet none of them had problems with the communist nazi EPA tee...wtf? I honestly didn't see much of a problem with it lol. Guess I just don't have much of a filter

I'd purchase one of those.

Haha I've had a couple requests for them now...I'll let you know if I decide to have them made. I'll need at least 12 people to order one. If anyone else is interested in me making the F-SNOW tee PM me today or tomorrow. I'll make a decision this week based on the interest.

Here is a more PC design option I'm doing preorders on now. Visit my site if you want this one

Wow! That is one way to keep money in the country! Have your parents invest it in a separate fund for you and cash out when rates are better? Or start exporting it via maple syrup. :p

Boyer, try using transferwise.com

You can transferfunds and usually only pay like a 0.5% fee on top of exchange rates.

Thanks for the tip, I checked them out but they do not currently offer CDN to USD. I added my name to their mailing list to notify me when they do.

As a non resident, my options are very limited but I have a buddy who travels abroad that has some very clever ways to move money offshore so I am working with him now.

And before anyone asks, yes, I trust him, lol.

He's telling me now to skip all the other services and just use bank transfers. If you have accounts with the particular bank already, they should cut you a deal on the exchange rates and charge a minimal fee. There are "other" options but he says the shadier it is, the worse the fees. If it's up and up money and you are in no hurry, just stick to the banks.

Since he works and earns his money offshore, he found it easier to set up residency out of country and avoid the hassle altogether. He was setup in Costa Rica but has recently bought property in Thailand as their "residency" regulations are much more lenient. CR requires you to be in-country far more than he likes to be. He works off the coast of Camaroon but seems to be somewhere different every couple weeks. In the last 2 months alone, he's posted from Dubai, Thailand, Canada, Germany, Costa Rica and last night's response came from Paris.

So a month ago, I flew to Canada to buy a truck. It happens to be a truck that was previously mine.

The owner picked me up at the airport in the truck. Pretty rad.

Get it back to Texas,
12036699_10204877534847162_5559572039972443594_n.jpg

And go to the local DMV to transfer the title only to find out from the nice lady behind the counter that I have to get it inspected by the "Auto Theft Task Force" (ATTF) to make sure i'm not importing a stolen vehicle. Which is odd to me because I was breiflly but thoroughly interrogated but the Customs/ Border Patrol agents in Detroit when I brought drove the truck across the border. And they signed off that it was good. But okay, whatever... ya'll want to check it out, fine, I guess.

latest

So when can the ATTF inspect my truck? "ATTF is only available to do the inspections on the 3rd Wednesday of each month, first come first serve."

So once again, i'm like "WTF?" but... okay... fine, I guess. So I talk to my boss, let him know what i'm doing this morning, this is the only day I can take it in yada yada...

I get to the police station at 8:30, talk to the man behind the absurdly tall counter:
Me: "Good morning, I need to have my vehicle inspected by the ATTF"
LEO: "I'm sorry sir, there is nobody available from that team today, you'll have to come back on November 18th"
Me: What?
LEO: Thats what the note here says.
Me: Okay, fine. I guess.

But seriously, its not fine. You had one job today. ONE JOB. I didn't make the rules that you should be available to inspect my vehicle, you did. I abide by your rules, and you don't.

I'm sure they were Task Forcing a lot of Auto Theft.

At 8:30 in the morning.

On a Wednesday.

You can go into your bank and work with their investing and brokerage team and they should be able to get you the best bank to bank rate without having to pay fees.

Went to a nice restaurant last night. One couple comes in wearing sweat pants and t-shirts, another comes in and the guy is wearing a flat brimmed baseball cap and leaves it on during the entire meal. No manners, no class. Grrrrr.
