Our shop is expanding so they added two lead positions. They are looking for two machinists to run our lathe and mill departments. My boss told me I meet every qualification for the lathe lead position but I'm not eligible to apply because Our HR department 1000 miles away have specified that any type of management position requires a bachelors. They don't care what the degree is in. I just have a HS diploma. Can't wait for a jackass with a liberal arts degree and minimal machining experience to come in and tell me how to run my machines....it's no wonder blue collar jobs in America are on the decline.

See if you can fight that. I would do whatever it took to demand a real answer on why a degree outweighs your experience and qualifications. IMO, ive always said a degree only gets you into the interview. But you already have an in at the company, so you should definitely be able to be considered. Fight it.

Couple places I applied too did 4 years of experience was equal to a bachelor degree. Does the person hiring have any say over what HR "needs"?

I tried. I had a meeting with my boss today and told him this was insane. He said he is trying to fight it but isnt making any headway. We work in the prototype shop of a 45 billion dollar medical device company. The global HR department said they aren't making exceptions to their entire management policy just for our tiny department....

Our policy used to be the same. We have since been acquired and have to get used to corporate America's illogical obsession with college.

l feel you on this @Wet Dreams.l worked several jobs with a coat and tie.Actually enjoyed it,but had several doors closed in my face because of no degree. And this was 25 years ago.

The way l see it is either go get the minimum required degree or become self employed.l chose the latter

As a side note,l'm making dam sure my son is getting his degree,so he won't walk in same path! Good Luck bro!

I wear not having a degree as a badge of honor now. I tried college for a couple semesters in my 20's and realized real quick it was a waste of time and money. *At least in my field of work.
i did collage and its really paying off for me now, working in a warehouse for less than i made in high school

And to be fair my degree took me far and made me some real good money for over a decade. Just out of options here and I put my family first. I could move and find work easy, but not while my parents are still here and need my help

So while we are building our house i bad to store a ton of stuff. My dad got me a deal worked out where i could use an old semi trailer that was at his shop. Well since January when everything went in it , they closed his shop. The manager of the plant that owns the trailer said it was still cool to keep my stuff there no one needs the trailer. Then i get a call monday tbat everything has to be out of it by Saturday due to the fact they are getting audited. Well, i was freaking out having a crazy busy week with work school and house stuff. I had tons to get done at house before they can put in sheetrock, plus i thought i would have to move all my crap. Well i ended up buying the trailer for 250 dollars so a j have to do now is move it over to my property. And im in it for so little money i almost want to cut the axles off of it and bury it and build it into a bunker.
