You need...
24vac transformer,
some shielded two conductor cable (cut up extension cord works)
Extension cord
Project box (any box to house the transformer and dimmer)
Standard light dimmer
Cut the extension cord female end off. Wire the male end into the 120v input. One of the leads off the transformer goes to the dimmer. Grounds get tied off. The remaining lead of the dimmer and the transformer go to each side of the hot wire.
I used guitar string (high e IIRC) for the element. As long as I don't turn the heat up too high I haven't had any issues with them burning out.
