its genetics and how abused your body has got over the years that determines what condition you are in/what you can do later in life. being young and stupid will either cause a short life or a crippled up body before its old. i was an air it out kid and now i'm an air it out old man. getting air is still what i love. thankfully i'm smart enough to know the difference between a good and bad idea. i'm crazy but not stupid enough to let it get me hurt bad or killed. also , its easy to get on the computer and say go big.

Life is not short,but youth is..I lived my youth in big air days with motox,it sure was fun then,now not so much..I wasnt paid to ride then but instead paying the price today... No one lives forever sounds like the same thing the crack head chain smoking guys say...up until they are about to die...then the story changes. Going big is cool and awesome but comes with a big price without risk management.
Good time for a buzzard quote.. hospitals and graveyards are full of big air big balls types...Im not fond of either,nor opiate addicts from self inflicted ridiculousness

Travis p and James stewart and guys really pushing limits in other sports get paid huge to do what they do,they also have specific insurance to cover them should something really bad happen,you wont find that to be the case in this sport
Looks like a long way of saying you are scared to flip surf. I have seen rolls but never a flip attempt!!! Tighten up, that should be a 2015 goal for you!!!!!!!

Wilkers you will be a flipper affectionado for life,but didnt we agree rolls are much harder and more technical,just less dangerous? ill leave the smashes to the youngins and enjoy the view..Ill play devils advocate and join your booster cause and push the youngins to doubles this season...a little destruction and carnage is always cool too.

Waves need to be respected!!! Flatwater only riders probably don't know waves. The ocean or big lakes can swallow you up and spit you out not breathing. Wave riding is a whole different level of adrenaline than a boat wave. The risk is so much greater and i love it but then again ive always been one to test thin ice too. Wilkey, you gonna be all better by spring wavedaze?

@masterblaster I thought the consensus on here over the years has been that learning rolls is more dangerous than flips ? Especially in medium height surf and up if you land on your side your legs and ankles are in the tray with impact forces moving laterally. Flops are really nothing if you stay connected, rather flop than over rotate one and flat land actually.

thats what the hammerhead did when it tore up my knee at wave days.... lateral movement sucks

Only times I've gotten hurt or close to hurt has been learning rolls. Stay connected to the ski while learning to flip and the worst that happens is you drink a lot of salt water...

I guess if your good at rolls it may be less dangerous but same can be said of flips. Rolls have hurt me more often than not. Surf and flat. I used to break my stuff right away at a freeride, now i try to show a little restraint and wait til the last day I'm there. 8 out of 10 flips may be good enough to not dart but the remainer is what gets ya.

Learning rolls in surf is more dangerous it requires more skill than huck and hope flips. But once u have it down is a far more consistent landing than flips and water depth is much less factor also. Flat landing rolls deff hurts. I try to bring them in nose first to elim that as well. I can see the landing much better also from that angle

I know it is difficult, but anyone used to flipping in the footholds, and tired of flat landings, should try flipping surf stance, it's slows rotation a lot. Just make sure it's deep enough! I have only down a couple myself, I have bruised both heels from flat landings, in small surf.

Tem the Circus tray is probably similar layout as mine. Rear hold and FFH are perfect layout for surf stance flips IMO. Surf stance flips are awesome for freeriding. You don't have to kick into the holds and troll around for a wave that you want to flip... Just stay surf stance shredding waves with speed and smash a flip when it looks right. It's like Zack said, let the waves tell you what to do.

yep! surf stance is the only way to go. your body is stronger with a foot forward. plus you can go fast and ride how you normally ride! no looking around in your tray once you see a wave then DECIDING you want to flip so you rush kick your feet into the footwells which has 3 results;

1. you kick your foot in then pull it out cuz its not in tight enough so you re kick and re kick then your time for flipping the wave has passed...... 2. you kick your foot in super hard so you dont redo step 1.... but you miss kicked and you a: kick your big toe into the side of your foot hold ( holy f@#&* PAIN) or you b: kick your foot too high and kick the top of your fot hold with the top of your foot ( holy f$@&@$@&$@@ PAIIIIN) 3. you say f it and rush kick... dont get it in good enough, say f it again and go for the flip and have your feet fly out......

with a strap my foot is in this super comfy dakine kite surf strap ALL DAY with zero pain and i just riiiiiiiiide and ride and ride flip roll spin surf whatever whenever because my foot is where it should be and is locked in. thats how you let the waves tell you. your in attack mode the entire time, not playing shuffle feet.

oops forgot step 4! step 4 is getting your foot in your foot hold so tight that you dont want to pull it out until you flip so you then skip nice clean waves for usually...............15 solid minuets riding around in circles looking for that perfect flip wave ( that never comes ) until your forced to remove your foot because it has now fallen asleep because its so tight in the foot hold..... that you didnt do anything at all other than ride 5 mph and get in other peoples way.
