I already have Fusion and Inventor, just no time to sit down and learn them yet.

Plus by doing it the long way, I get a better understanding of tool path and what my machine is actually capable of so when I do start programming, I actually know what to program.

You can't program tool path if you don't know what tool path is, lol.

good point! I learned programming at the console using a calculator, blueprint, and G code. definitely makes it nice to program on a pc, then be able to read the code as it runs
 
I used to program our CNC turret punch press like that back in the day, then that part of my job was replaced with solid works and I spend all of that time I used to write g code, reading the entire internet while getting paid.... Then I got bored and went back to school...lol

I finally finished my prototype steering system. I run obnoxiously wide bars and wanted a knee-friendly design that wouldn't wear out, loosen over time or corrode in fresh/saltwater. So far it glides like glass with any tension one could want. It runs on bronze bushings and uses most Boxxer/Fox pattern MTB direct-mount stems. That leaves handlebar options wide open to any 31.8mm or 35mm MTB bar depending on stem choice.

I fabricated all of the components by hand on my manual mill. At some point I might have them properly CNC'd. First I need to test the system and make sure no issues arise or design changes are needed.

There's a good 30+ hours of design and fab time here, probably more.

My belt drive kit should be here any day now so I finished up the wiring changes to convert my spindle from a 1HP 90VDC motor to a 1.5HP 308 VAC 3PH motor. In addition to now being controlled from the CNC software, it will also increase my speed range from 80-2500 to 80-8000 RPM.

The speed controller I ordered didn't end up interfacing correctly but I discovered my existing controller already had the feature built in so it ends up I had everything I needed all along.

To test it all out, I hooked up the VFD for my test bench to my CNC controller and wrote programs to automate my test procedures for CDI's and Stators. :D

Edit: I tested a few CDI's yesterday using the program and it's absolutely brilliant! I wish I had done this ages ago!

Finished fabricating my handlepole bracket over the weekend. I wanted something that didn't exist and had to make it myself. The three main goals were to align the stock cable bellows with the right side RRP tube, use the OEM handlepole spring, and have enough room to run double nuts on the end of the bolt. The right upright is properly threaded M14x1.5. The pole stops are OEM Kawasaki with ARP bolts for strength.

100% hand-made on the manual mill.

Only mistake I made was not putting the stops forward enough. I had to move them north a bit.

My latest piece is an adapter to convert my work lights to leds. It is threaded into the flashlight bodies and the the leds sit into the center pocket and use the piece as a heatsink. This was my first time threading, and the first part was destroyed by my own lack of skill. The second one turned out awesome just have to part it off and polish it up. 20170514_171040.jpg

Not a big job today but certainly one where I am glad I own a lathe. I used it to repair the power seat motors in my Dodge Ram.

I yanked the two little motors that control the front and rear up/down and found they both had a stripped gear. I checked on eBay and found a seller that just happened to be local.

30 minutes later, I have them in my hand and it's time to break the motors down, machine down the shafts and fit the new brass gears.

2 hours and $110 later, I have fully adjusting power seats again. :)

I know right! How many Ram trucks out there have stripped gears?

If I had the time, this would definitely be an offering I would add to my list of OCD services.

I am already looking into what it would take to CNC the brass gears in house. That seems like the most expensive part to me.

Heres my most recent "waiting on car parts" just trying to stay busy project.

I took a 6.5 hp gas motor that's been sitting on the shelf for years and converted it into an air compressor pump. I just replaced the cylinder head with an aluminum plate and 4 reed check valves off a China 150cc scooter.

So far I only have like 50 bucks into it
Found the old compressor tank assembly in the trash.
Scooter reed valves were free from a buddy.
Copper tubing free left in the attic from the old A/C.
Belt and pulley $25
Craigslist 115v 3/4hp motor $25

Yeah yeah I know you can buy a nice compressor for around $100 but I made this mostly from stuff I had just laying around. I'm having a blast and that's what it's all about!

I finally received my spindle belt drive kit after a 4 month wait so I didn't waste any time before getting it installed.

I stripped out my low speed gear so I have been limping along making the best of it. I bought a new gear and would have changed it out had I known it would take 4 months for the belt kit to arrive.

Total install time was about 6 hours including wiring the new motor to the VFD and calibrating the spindle speeds in the CNC software.

I ordered the kit with the motor plate to match my motor but it still took some modification to work. I also had to modify the Z axis mount so I could rotate it to clear the new spindle motor.

In addition to doubling the spindle speed, It's also almost 10db lower at all speeds and tops out at 77db at 5500 RPM. I was hoping for closer to 7500 RPM but until I upgrade to better bearings, I don't think I'll push my luck.
