So, you are really saying your money is tied up in materials?

Yeah, that's how most builders work.. You send them money and they USE it to build hulls/parts. Most builders (the ones I have worked with anyway) take deposits to order materials etc. To expect him to have the original $5500 sitting in an account months later just in case he backs out is kinda ridiculous. I'm not taking sides or saying he should or shouldn't do whatever, obviously I hope it all gets worked out, just trying to help explain how this whole deposit thing works most of the time.

In the contracting biz in wi, this is reffered to as theft by a contractor. If customer cancels contact and asks for down payment money back, you can be prosecuted if you dont have it. Im not taking sides in this matter one way or the other... just pointing out facts as to how it works in normal businesses

Definitely can't argue that buddy. I was speaking from my own experience with hull builders, custom composite parts I've ordered, or services that I've had done by well known composite folks. I always knew when I sent deposits that it was to fund the builds and get them started. It was clearly discussed in my cases though and I never had to deal with asking for it back.

Christian ,i feel for your situation at hand.something tells me that Steve doesn't intentionally plan on wronging anyone . i mean if dude just started a family and is trying to run a business ,this kind of doesn't jive with the shady guy m/o .sounds like just another guy trying to make his way best he knows how in this world ,maybe making some mistakes along the way.But from a business stand point it sucks being treated poorly and it sounds like you have been more than patient . i myself as a licensed building contractor cant legally take more than 10% down on a project before work starts,so i know how it feels to put your 50%or 100% money down in good faith on a build (at this point you are being very trusting ,especially if its a long distance thing) so it is very important for a builder to keep a good rep ,somewhat open lines of communications with clients, also to be trustworthy.especially since a lot of times it requires large deposit up front .i understand the need for larger deposit for these custom builds,as its not mapped out in any signed contract with installments or any way to protect the builder from the flakey client who may not come thru with a full payment .lets face it a lot of the market are young guys who may encounter financial issues themselves during the process .its just the nature of this business.so the larger deposit covers this issue in a way.i don't think builders are using peoples money for there R&D ventures ,and if they are thats their personal gamble with their legal business obligations. One other good point made that was made in post #86 is that when a builder makes to the point of being called "reputable" it has its own value in itself . the markets changing to a new era with some newer names trying their hand at making hulls (results TBD?) .here on the "x" guys spend each year creating countless threads on their personal perception of value from these builders creating a "Huge" mixing pot of opinions for what the terms of " value" &"quality" is , some right some wrong ,i think most would agree we all would like to save some $$$ and get some quality to boot ,not to mention good timelines ,ect... but at what cost ? For the few who know the answers to these question this is what keeps you in the mix with todays competitive hull market .hope thing all work out Christian

What about Swaps?

Good to see you working it out with Christian. It would help to at least say "I am in contact with the buyer". And leave it at that instead of coming in and making flippant comments and not addressing anything. Prospective buyers need to see you doing the right thing. Not coming off as a jack hole. Your hulls speak for themselves. Please, back them up with customer service. Trickys and Amanda's skis are incredible looking.

None of you have to worry we don't take deposites any more ....only sell instovk items
