I am land locked and have to travel for surf, just got back from Costa Rica and Nicaragua and the surf was great. Did I miss my ski not really. My wife a good surf board and a cold drink is all I need, would love to surf every day and don't think I would miss my ski at all.

We do have fun on our skis but once the weather gets cold the dirt bikes are a blast.

Jet skis have always had very high turnover, mainly because of the age of the participants. Nobody comes back later in life because its not fun when you get too fat. It doesnt matter what anyone else is doing unless you are in the business or must be part of a scene. You are in the sport as long as your ski is 100% ready to ride.

Jett turn in your mancard. Like everything else it waxes and wanes. you will miss it. in our ride group they come and they go. but for the most part the diehard riders are still there. some ride less now but that is mostly financial. Some only ride a few times a year but they are still riders.

Like a few others here my kids are 8, 10 and 12 and I am Friggen Dying for them to ride with me. so regardless of any other reasons of why I do or dont ride I still cant wait for them to experience what I have and see them enjoy it.

lastly Change what you can and endure the rest.
Life is short- lets ride.

I left for 15 years but now I am back... a little bigger, certainly not better.

I don't know where jetskiing is going, but I do know that I am going jetskiing. :Banane09:

Busch and ESPN have left the building. It is not 1980, and the course marshalls no longer ride standups on wedges. We have to get past this "glory days" mentality. That is not coming back.
I have a 14 year old ski, am dangerously close to 50, and ride once a week, living near a river and having a slip near a boat club. I'm looking for another ski for my kids who are now just old enough to ride. Do I ride surf ? It's an occasional treat. No Backflips, too old. I don't need TV sponsorship, public kudos, or a mass of other skis. If it is too rough to ride I go in. Don't need to be a hero, live to ride another day. When the wind whips up those endless four foot waves, I drop everything as "surf's up". (river riding)

I've ridden surf in Florida, the Jersey shore, and Long Island, NY. I've met and ridden with past champions and current "names" in the sport. You can't do that in ANY other motorsport easily.

When the wind whips up across the river, it's me and a dozen windsurfers. Keeping a ski running, the space in the garage, etc, is an occupation. I have kids, a soccer schedule on weekends, etc. I'm not 20 with endless time to fill anymore, but the occasional hour I can steal, jumping waves in the river, is a mini vacation and a mental health injection.

I do it for me. I was out last weekend, it was 50 degrees, and the boat club guys looked at me with either "you are nuts" or "you go !". I had endless wind driven waves and a buoy field all to myself. I look forward to showing that to my kids too. (not the 50 degree part). If I had to drive two hours to water, it might be different, but as long as I'm a mile from the ramps, this IS my sport.

a jet ski is just a reason to go to the water. I was afraid my SJ was going to out live me so I'm building it from the crank up. brap

Hopefully, the new jetski movie they were shooting parts of in Havasu will build interest in the younger crowd.

Not that many years ago, I saw a trailer with a couple of standups on it and thought, "Man, who still uses skis from the early 80's. They must be pretty embarrassed pulling up to the ramp on those."

Then, about 5 years ago, I bought a pair of old couches because they were sooo cheap and I was preparing to move onto the water. I had ridden couches before, but got bored with them after doing about 15 minutes worth of spins (before I learned how much I just enjoyed cruising on them - after I got mine), so I really had no interest in "jetskis" at all.

When I told my neighbor, Penguin, that I bought them because they were cheap but that I found them boring, he suggested I go to the X and look into getting a standup. I came here and saw pictures of Ross, Parrdaddy, etc. out in the surf, and my perceptions completely changed. I quickly bought a SN, unfortunately, right when my first child was born, followed 19 months later by my second, so I do more planning on my ski and thinking about when I'll eventually have some weekends back then I do riding, much much more. I enjoy wakesurfing, and it's so much more convenient than jetskiing, that it gets my free time for now.

The point I'm trying to make, and doing a crappy job of it, is that standups suffer from a lack of exposure and preconceived ideas of outdated skis. When a young coworker of mine asked me about jetskis and I told him he should consider a standup, his first reaction was "people still ride those" followed by "why would you want one". Once I showed him some video and pics, well....

I personally think the best think that could happen to standups (other than the X games) is that the surf freestylers somehow hook up with the Association of Surfing Professionals and start doing demos at the surf events. Until standups start making it on television, the following and participation will be limited. The way that is going to happen is big air tricks in the surf.

Open Your Eyes
i have been riding for a couple years now. nothing serious, just messing around on my 550 i got for free. but then one day i found the x. i was already on the search for a newer standup but as soon as i saw some of your skis i had the bug. thats all it took, next thing i know i have 10k invested in the hobby within a few months. i had a mag pump before i even saw my ski. the only thing that has been holding me back is being deployed. im all in and they have to lock me up before i get rid of my superjet. i have had all the cool toys growing up but i have never been as serious as i am now with my superjet.

people my age have there work cut out for them to keep the sport alive. im 22, single, and have a crazy need for adrenalin. that being said, im not going anywhere but to the ocean!

i might add that the x can be deterring at times when people respond "do a search". if your already there in the thread and you see it is there first post help them out a little. it wasnt but 5 months ago when i joined and i know the feeling. dont worry my panties are not getting a wad because i could care less if someone wants to help me because im going to help myself. yes there is plenty of info that has already been covered but new :):):):) comes out everyday and when you re-explore old ideas you find things you didnt see before. i politely called someone out just the other day because of his response to a newcomers question. if your not willing to help out the new guys then dont post. i will and try the best i can to point them in the right direction if i dont know the answer.

don't worry about keeping the sport alive... keep yourself alive and enjoy the sport.

X games won't take us because we are considered not eco-crunchy (not that snow sports really are either, but..)

Surfers like jetskis for tow in or rescue but have otherwise worked to keep us OUT of the water.
