Surfriding Which trick holds more respect to you: Re-entry or Backflip ?

Although I've yet to ride out of a bf, and my re-entries are way less than stylish, I think it's wrong to compare the two against each other.
There are riders that do mostly air tricks and there are riders that mostly carve. It's pretty rare to find someone who is truly adept at both. (or has put serious effort into both) Everybody knows the names of the riders that are good at both!
I consider a re-entry a carving trick even if it's big air. Because, yes, it's a surfing thing. It takes a bit more understanding of the surf. In that respect, I like the re-entry.
But spectators who don't understand what it takes to do a good one will prefer the backflip.

A very flipping member told me b4 I ever tried one, that a BF is the easiest trick there is. Just gotta nut-up.

BTW: I like re-entries where the nose is level or down. A re-entry with the nose pointing at the sky, to me, is lame.

Just my .02.

I don't understand the "dislike" of 180 nose stabs.
Other than straight-jumping a wave, it's the first step to new and better stuff! Sure, we've seen plenty of 'em, but there is always a crew of new riders that go thru the same steps.

Plus: this is a trick that is "do-able" without a big motor or a wave. Flatwater riders can do it, stock 701's can do it,....you're gonna see a lot of 'em!

if it makes you feel any better, I don't think my opinion on stabs is the consensus. I've never heard one other person complain about them.

Stanton High is one of the "Big-Boyz" now. It's expected of him.

Personally, I think his style is awesome. No footholds, total surf stance with straps, HUGE air, and I love all the pics he posts.

Tough being one of the big-boyz!

There's a lot to be said on behalf of someone who finds their own way of riding. Someone who doesn't buy footholds just because everyone on the X uses footholds. Someone who uses the tray, as narrow as it is, and pulls off some great stuff.
I'm just guessing, but I'll bet his experience with waves started long b4 he got a jet ski.

im feeling it out. my leg is trashed from a re-entry gone hard landing in Peru last weekend. thigh is black and blue and under my knee aswell.

what are you gonna do? i prefer nose high straight airs out the back. you know this....

I think its super cool that opinions vary so much on most respected trick. it seems you'll always respect the trick that you haven't pulled off perfectly yet. IMO the floater/drop in on in the critical section on a mackin 8 footer is my most respected and i don't really see any doing that anymore. Ray Barre used to do em and curtis udal will pull some sick ones when its big but i know when i get to that critical part on a piching monster, dropping back in off the floater is super scary.

Backflips in the surf take more then just balls some of you guys on here talk about them like they are easy for anyone. I took a beating over and over learning to flip there is so much to take in and its all about timing and judgement.

Re-entries look cool when they are big.

When i started surf riding i used to do nose stabs then they turned into big nasty 360 spiral to flat landing things so i learned to flatten them out into a barrell roll and then didnt bother with nose stabs again for a couple of years. After i got brs down going left and right i went back to doing nose stabs to figure out the tecnique. It took awhile but now i can stab left and right without preference depending on which way the wave is breaking.

Backflips were the hardest for me to learn so get my respect.

Those guys that can drop into a monster wave right before it breaks should get a Fkn medal!

^ what he said and atomicpunk ! both are difficult for different reasons the mental block i get when trying to flip is tough to get over you only have to give it a handfull up a vertical wave and lean / pull back yeah its that easy try doing that when your brain is screaming at you " this is a really bad idea you need to bail now " every wave is different so every flip is different . its not as bad as under rotating say an mx bike but still it hurts and if that ski lands on you ouch ! plus getting washing machined is never fun if you dont recover in time . as for re entrys dont look as good for non riders but for those that know mucho respect ive tried a few best i can do is land back on top and not very big either lol been swallowed up plenty of times and spat out up the beach again not fun getting pouded into the sea bed . both tricks are easy once you have done them loads and sussed out how to get it done . but for the likes of me, a just about flipper and half arsed re entry rider both get my respect along with nice CLEAN plate to plate rolls something i can do but i see alot of 3/4 or very sketchy rolls aswell
