I think you have to have pretty deep pockets to play that game, and long arms too. My buddy keeps telling me I need to develop one but there's not a chance in hell I want my pockets or arms anywhere near something like that. I have read your posts and in between the lines of your comments for years now and gathered it was not nearly as simple as it sounds. :)

I'm conflicted on the whole warranty expectation from ATP though. The one Epic in our group gave our buddy absolute fits and cost him a few thousand dollars all said and done. But, that same unit worked flawlessly in every other ski we swapped it into. Sadly it was destroyed, (battery hooked up backwards) before we could get to any resolution on it. So, from our experience, the issue was with the ski electronics themselves and not directly the EPIC. It's sad for my buddy but how do you claim a unit faulty and demand a warranty when it still works in 4 out of 5 skis? I have always maintained that it was a lack of RF shielding or filtering in the power circuit that made it extra sensitive to electrical "noise" but that's hardly any consolation. If nothing else, it would have been nice to find an external filter or some other fix so that the original version wasn't a total write off.

The good news is, the Gen1 EPIC happens to run flawlessly in my ski and spares are getting cheaper and cheaper! :)
If you do go down the route of ignitions these guys may be worth a look

I have a Japanese wife if you need a hand to talk with them.

Thanks for the info but it's really nowhere on my radar. Especially given the environment that seems to surround the aftermarket CDI market. Who would willingly sign up for such punishment?

I have 2 doing the same thing, but I bought them used and I know both got wet while i was running them. Would be nice if there was a fix, they are now paperweights.
I've noticed that the "audio style" plug on the end of the programming lead may corrode internally when exposed to water. Try taking it apart and cleaning it- unit might come back to life.
And no lumpy, I don't know what all this has to do with the op's question either.

It doesn't have much to do with the original subject, but this has been a pretty informative thread IMO. We've seen that some folks have issues with epic ignitions, some don't, heard some first hand reports.

Good stuff IMO. Its what this forum is about.

I'm personally still too nervous to try one. My ski runs really well, especially in terms of reliability, and spending my hard earned money on something that appears to be pretty sensitive to..... heat, less than perfect stator/coil/etc, salt, etc etc etc.... and only has a 90 day warranty. I'm glad its working awesome for some folks, and the reports of crazy power as a result of the increased timing intrigues me... but the overall reported success rate isn't high enough for me to risk becoming a statistic.

And unfortunately, ^^ that sums it up nicely.

It always surprises me how many guys expect long life and warranty on AM parts, technically racing engine use is what we use them for. A new motocross bike comes with zero warranty, (except ktm) the Epic works great when it works, like the Solas mag 144, or the Xscream cracking waterbox, or the wet/dry Powerfactor crack pipe, what it boils down to isif youwant to play you have to pay.

I know you have done a ton of testing on these. Many like myself have had no issues but many out there are posting about problems. It has got to the point of Epic's having a reputation for being quirky and I am sure you don't want that. Your customer service to me over the years has been nothing short of awesome so I know you are a good guy. You have already posted on this thread so everyone knows you are reading all of these comments and are willing to engage others on the thread.

I'm going to ask you to please talk a bit about the testing you have done to let everyone know the effort put into these units and what they can take. Please address the speculations on heat buildup as a possible problem. Have you gathered random used ignition systems to run with the epic and discovered any "usual" weak links? I expect you have. That would be incredibly helpful to those who have problems from the get go. It seems like it wouldn't hurt to discuss your opinions and knowledge of common issues here.

All of the people you called out for bashing you seem to have responded with either apologies or respectful clarifications so I really don't think this is a hostile environment for discussion. I hope you consider it. I would love to hear what you think instead of a bunch of random conjecture.

I agree with McDog. And swapmeet summed it up perfect.

Not that this has anything to do with the OPs question, but... One thing I really look at before I buy any product is how that company handles customers and how they represent themselves. On the forums and in person. Not speaking specifically to this situation, as there are numerous business owners on these forums who do it, but anyone who comes to a forum as a business owner and becomes combative with its existing customers (and potential customers) should really stop and think how those actions are productive to their long term goals.

I was so stoked about this ignition when I first got a hold of it because I have always wanted this level of curve tuning on any vehicle because I have spent a lot of time trying to tune distributors in classic muscle cars. The first time I ran the epic on a stock 701 with a b pipe it was the best that motor had ever ran. And it still performs amazingly well when its working, and the flame ts2 is an incredible innovation that i know works very well in tough conditions. I don't know where all of this hate wagon came from, people are passionate about getting the most out of their ski, emotions run high and its a rollercoaster at times. Criticism is part of the process, and should be taken in stride.
