I would assume that the backfire is due to the excessive fuel in the crankcase and exhaust. Like Mike B said, if this isn't the case, then your timing could be way off. Are the plugs soaked? Have you tried what I suggested?

I didn't have any issue shimming/aligning the motor. However, my problem was the pump alignment. The drive shaft, where it enters the engine comparment, was sitting low. I shimmed the back of the pump to bring the shaft up. I'm sure that was the issue, since I had shimmed my motor before...

Thanks for the info. I pulled my motor and removed the mid shaft. I then shimmd the pump to align the drive shaft directly in the middle of the hole in the firewall. Re-installed the midshaft and then re-aligned the motor. Vibration went away.

I have have this same "play" in mine. Looking to rebuild it. However, if this is normal I could save the time, effort, and downtime. Any input is appreciated.

I just looked at the schematic - this could get expensive if I try to replace everything. Do you think I'll find noticeable wear to the bearings in order to determine what needs to be replaced? Assuming that this is the issue.

The rev limiter actually richens the fuel mix to avoid over reving, so this wouldn't be your issue since you say it runs when you prime it. It sounds like fuel starvation. Are you sure your carb and jets are clean with no restrictions?

Is it an OEM SeaDoo starter or a Chinese replacement? Most of the starters being sold on Ebay and even through SBT are all from China. If you do a search on this site, you will see all the issues people have had with them. Some starters last a week, some a year, and some never work right out...
