Pearless Transaxle; the type used in most light duty riding lawnmowers. They weigh about 30 lbs +/- and have around 6 forward gears, and reverse, brake as well. All you would need to do would be to bolt it to the frame and mount your motor and batteries. The input shaft has a large pulley on it that can be changed to adjust gearing/ratio. To get it as low profile as possible you could even use a long belt and rotate the motor perpendicular to the axis of the transaxle. Go buy a clapped out riding mower on Craigslist or a scrap yard and get to work. I would keep the front of the tractor as well for the steering linkage, axles, etc.
Note: They have a differential you may want to weld up for increased traction if you find problems in the sand.
