Quick steering, UMI is best bang for your buck with a stock pole.
Starting in 2008 Yamaha changed the Superjet handlepole to have a shorter pole. The top casting of the pole was changed in '08 to a shorter piece with a shorter throw cable for some reason no one seems to know. The 08-up steering cable is shorter in throw to fit this pole. This is why the 2008-up do not turn as well as 1996-2007 Superjets.
You can change the steering cable to the longer throw of the 96-07 SJ cable, but you have to modify cable mount area, and move the cable attachment point needs to modded and moved on the pole. There is no commercially available bracket that I am aware of to do this. We sell the SS cable mount bracket from Yamaha sitdowns to help with cable mounting. Some mount it to pole directly and some have added a piece of metal to the plate.
After replacement you can take advantage of a/m steering systems with more throw and also move the attachment point inward on steering nozzle for more throw as well.

Yes, only way to get more steering throw. Also will be needed if you want to chage poles or steering system later.
I would buy a new pole and OVP steering system at the same time. I have been threw it and if I did it again I would foucs on what you are looking to improve and just get what you want now!

I had both pre and post Superjets - I could not believe how much better my 2004 SJ was steering and in the surf the older hull was better IMHO - that said I built my Rickter with the 2010 SJ but with RRP steering.
I got the 07 cable with the mount from Jetmaniac. Then I fabbed up a plate that moved the mounting point down into the handle pole so the steering cable would work without binding or bottoming out. It takes some work, but it's not difficult. There are threads here on the X showing examples of this cable mount. I'll see if I took any before I installed it. Installing the new cable is pretty easy too.

These photos are from the bracket installed. I didn't take any before I bolted it up. But this thread is where I got most of my info. You will have to grind out the opening at the top of the pole so the mounting bracket has enough space to slide down into the pole. Any questions let me know.

Oh ok. I guess I Won't fully understand until I start ripping into it. Honestly just tempted to put a pole and ovp clamp and everything on anyways. Things so fun. Just chilling at the lake today

been really warm prob could have gotten away with no suit but I went out 3 times yesterday haha burned almost 10 gal. I'll bet it stays good into september,. got a new jettribe suit on the way also pair of those special shoes. you know you are a sicko when you own stand up jetski footwear lol
