Some people say you don't need them on a 08+ because of the factory ones built in, but they really helped the handling and rough water ride of our ski.

Did you change ride plates as well?

Our whole family and extended family ride ski's. So we've ridden about everything and every combination you can. We have had a SXR for years, but always wanted a SJ for jumping waves. Last year we ran across a good deal on an 08 with Riva's whole RPM kit on it. It had their rideplate, grate, B pipe, prop, reeds, ADA head and air cleaners. It ran okay, but had no low end at all. Handling was fair, but nothing like the SXR (800 at the time). Over the winter we did an update to the ski adding the pre 08 steering cable, RRP steering/bars and sponsons. For the engine we stuck with the stock 38's (removed chokes), ported the cylinder and case. We also discovered it had the wrong prop in it which accounted for the poor low end, switched to a 10/16. We also found the previous owner lied, it still had the stock reeds. We added Vforce2 reeds.

First ride out the ski was darn near unrideable! It would lay over to one side then dart to the other side. People talk about the 08+ sometime doing quirky stuff like chinewalking, but everyone kept telling me we installed the sponsons wrong. That would be a disaster, but I just didn't think that was it. I've never been a fan of the Riva tri loader intake grate, so on a longshot I thought a more agressive grate might work better. I bought a Worx 228, it 100% fixed the issue. The ski now handles fantastic, turns on a dime and jumps waves like you're in the ocean. Everyone that rides it goes on and on how the ski handles and turns. I really think it would keep up with the SXR on a buoy course, but the SXR now has an 1100, so that ended that dream.

That's the long answer to your question, we are still are running the Riva ride plate. Some time I'll try something else just to compare.

So you would reccomend the tubbies? I'd buy them if they improve handling. We have a buoy course on the lake and I've been jumping the occasional wake and doing random 180's by accident went it breaks free haha.

I agree, it's a preference thing. There are a lots of mods I would do before sponsons.
That being said IMO to corner hard on the 08 you need to lean it over and ride aggressive. Doing that can make the nose dig in going around a corner, sponsons help prevent that. We also like that in rough water they help the nose ride higher and therefore you can go faster while chasing cruisers.

mbrick, do you use blowsion tubbies or have you ever tried a newer sj with them?
Ski is entirely stock except for an 08+ stainless prop. I don't think sponsons are holding me back. I also have not ridden a ski with them though.

I've been riding it a few years now and still having a blast. It could sometimes use a little more power but I haven't wanted to tear into it since it's a very clean, stock engine. But most of the time it's more than I need for tooling around.

And no, the hat is not sewn on :) It's got a chin strap, a definite requirement.

Agreed from what others have said, the harder I ride the ski the harder it turns. I still haven't reached nearly it's potential but it sure is fun trying.

The river was empty, it was perfect.

Fu*king dinged a rock today so pissed right on the edge of the intake grate/hull. Does this hull material absorb water and do I need to repair it ASAP?

Just bought a new Superjet last Saturday. First day out hit the bottom of the river and got some decent sized scratches. Second day out hit a tree branch a foot under the water and got some light scratches. Looking forward to hearing some responses on this subject.

I already found the paint code for the black if you're interested. Dropped mine off to the fiberglass guy yesterday, just staring at the lake in this beautiful weather. I guess I need a backup ski. Rode my girlfriends js 550 for about 5 minutes I'm all set not sure why anyone would put money into those things.

Awesome thanks for the paint code!

Yeah I originally started riding on a js550 and every time I get on one I'm disappointed. Do you have insurance on your ski? I was terrified thinking my ski would sink the first day out lol

It's hard to see from the pics how bad the damage is. How deep would you say it is?
