wow. I guess that proves you have to provide for yourself. I will be doing more in the future to make sure I'm disaster ready.

Relying on the government is like using an expired condom and hoping it works.

What???? Your not supposed to used expired condoms. I will have to rethink my plan.....

Bruce is close, but really.... relying on the government is more like washing off a used condom in the sink and going for round 3.

That makes sense, i usually flip it around and go for round 2. I should really try washing them, think of the money i could save to buy more skis.

FUCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCK! Had power for 3 hours!! Then an electrical fire started in the buildings er room. 6 firetrucks, 10 cops, and a helicopter later....we are sitting here in the dark....... AGAIN!!!! Fireman almost gave me a heart attack screaming "FIRE GET THE FU_K OUT!" This is the 2nd time I had power for less then 4hours in 2 WEEKS! This is getting painful.

Decided now is a good time to start drinking a few beers!

i just got power back on last night, they went door to door inspecting every house in my area to make sure each one was safe to restore it to, if they didnt like the way something looked or your panel went under water line they pull your meter and install a locked block off until fixed and inspected again. guess they are just looking to keep everyone safe avoid the fires etc. of just throwing the switch without knowing if everyones good.

They were doing the same inspection process here to all the first floor units that got flooded. Unfortunatley looks like someone was running multiple electric heaters and caused there panel to trip, but the breaker failed to trip and started melting.

Salt water is a bitch. I can't imagine fixing all the power in lower Manhatten and the entire state of NJ. It's just a HUGE task. I am actually surprised as many people are up and running as they are. I would think the Salt would have destroyed everything.

This has really got my family and I thinking about how prepared we are for such a thing like this. The first thing on the list is to get a generator. What size do you all of you recommend after going through all of this? I was thinking of a Honda eu3000is model. It will also make a great addition to the camp trailer.

Agreed.

I have seen too many people make fun of people "prepping" and I think to myself, they will be the first ones crying.

First you need to decide how much fuel you are able to store/keep fresh, then figure out what load you will need to carry. Adjust the size of generator by your load and how much fuel you need for your duration.

Thanks Brian. Only looking to power the fridge and maybe a portable AC unit. The 3000 would work good for this application. Fuel storage around my house is never a concern!!
