First Stand-Up/Superjet

Alright just to keep things updated, I've made a decent amount of progress at least in my opinion with the hull. I ended up glassing over the hole where a scupper valve would've went, I'll just run one or two bilge pumps and have less possible failure points. Also have the thru hull exhaust pipe permanently mounted. And then finished filling the footholds with foam and glassed over it. It's officially ready for paint as of today and will hopefully have the top half painted next week sometime.

Other than that it's just a matter of ordering things when I have the money. I still need all pump components and cables. Then to figure out what I'm going to do with the motor, definitely running an ADA girdled head and Factory Pipe, but I'm still undecided on if I'm going to swap in 61x cylinders and give a DIY porting template a go or just run the 62t untouched.

Here's some update pictures, I'll take some more tomorrow as I thought I had more.

Start/stop switch came in. And I decided since I'm doing everything by myself might as well give painting a shot. Going with automotive paint gonna do a base and clear in orange.

Laid down some primer today, overall I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out, I have a couple of scratches that I didn't see before that I need to fill. But the orange peel is no where near as bad as thought it was going to be for my first time shooting paint. Now tomorrow I'll go over it with some 600 grit to get rid of any orange peel and it should be ready for paint on Sunday.

In case anyone is curious this is PPG 2k high build polyurethane primer, with no reducer shot out of a 1.8 spray gun

That was before clear coat, and this is after. I'll buff the orange peel out on Sunday.

The color is "Header Orange" from Dodge's Charger and Challenger.

I bought the same gravity feed gun. (I am thinking of changing over to a siphon feed gun.) But if you wouldn't mnid posting up your compressor, dryer, expansion tank, gun set up, it would be appreciated.

I bought the same gravity feed gun. (I am thinking of changing over to a siphon feed gun.) But if you wouldn't mnid posting up your compressor, dryer, expansion tank, gun set up, it would be appreciated.

The compressor I used is a 22 gallon 6.0cfm @40psi and 4.1@90psi. It did fine while painting it only had to build pressure once during each coat. Dryer was just a cheap desiccant filter at the bottom of the gun. I actually bought another gun to spray the primer with a 2.3mm tip and ended up shooting the primer at 28psi according to the gun regulator. The base coat was shot with the harbor freight gun which is a 1.4mm tip, sprayed at 23psi at the gun regulator. Both was with the fluid adjustment all the way open and one turn back in. Same with fan adjustment, but I had to keep messing with the fan adjustment on the harbor freight gun in between coats because I took the gun apart to clean it after each coat.

Definitely not a professional and this was my first time painting with a spray gun, but I'm happy with the results. I did probably spend a good 10 hours watching painting videos on YouTube and that prepared me a lot for what to expect, and made me feel way more comfortable attempting this.

Thanks for sharing your set up specifics and for sharing your experience. In 2015 I started putting together my spray set up but never finished it so brushed or rolled what I needed to get done on the trailers. I love Valspar hardener with Valspar Tractor and Implement paint. You get my respect. I know it takes time to post up pics and vids. Thank you.

So I got a little over zealous when clear coating the hood and had a bunch of runs. I believe the main reason it ran so much is because I never readjusted the fan pattern after putting the gun back together after cleaning it and was putting too much fluid in such a small pattern. I got most of the runs out no problem after letting it dry then taking some 400 grit to them. There was 3 spots where I accidentally sanded through the clear and 2 where I somehow managed to sand through the base coat as well.

At this point I was ready to throw the hood over the fence, but figured I would take a small brush and "touch up" the spots where I sanded through the base coat. I thought that once clear coat went over it as long as it was sanded smooth that you wouldn't notice. Well I was wrong and now have 2 terrible looking touch up jobs on the hood. Even the spot that I didn't add more paint to came out darker for some reason. At this point I'm pretty frustrated and out of clear coat but do have some base coat left. I think I can live with the spots as they're not in super noticeable areas, but at the same time I hate half assing things. To fix this I believe my only option is to completely sand the hood back down to primer and start from scratch. But this is what I'm working with...

My plan right now is to let it dry and just stare at it until it bothers me enough to completely re-do the hood or I can get over it. I'm gonna put the ski together enough to see how it looks when its together and make a decision after that.

I think I can live with it.

Quick question this is with what I'm assuming are stock hood latches. Should I go with aftermarket for a better fit? This doesn't seem right to me.

The hood doesn't sit in top of the hood seal in the front, it sits behind it then slides forward when I latch it.

That's what I figured but there's no wiggle room. The first picture is with the hull mounts slid as forward as I can get it. If it get the hooks in where they're supposed to then the hood sits really crooked on the hull.

Getting prepared to add turf and I'm wondering if I should still sand with 40 grit before applying it? I'm not too worried about what it looks like underneath the turf but I feel like the new paint doesn't stand a chance against sanding with a heavy grit. Even though it doesn't matter what it looks like underneath the turf I'd like for it all to be one color and not have the factory blue under the turf.

Your hood hooks are bent. What condition is your hood seal in? Did the hood line up when you pulled it apart?
