Funny that , i have found 48 novis to have awesome throttle response
So much in fact a free rider on his fully sick 5mm stroker crapped himself when he rode my ported 701 b-pipe and new style 48 novis

Best thing on this thread.

Scottie

The truth is alot of people ride my ski and then want me to tune their ski and little do they know-that is the LAST thing they want! LOL I take my minimal experience and have a look under their hood and find that I see 30mm of light down the bore of the carbs with the plates CLOSED!!! Then grab the throttle wheel and slide the shafts side to side only to find 8' of horizontal play. Pull the plug wire boots all to find plugs that are at least 200 years old. Open the Ebox cap all to have Jaws come out. Open the gas cap all to find fuel that geled 10 years ago, and so on and so on. I just shake my head and thank God that I have learned better and know people that know people that really know how to tune carbs. lol

Yet again proving my point! You know how to get Novi's to work for you and therefore can probaly make them work real good on a Prius!

I don't think the specific name brand is as important as is having the support to get ABC carbs doing all they can do. If John Doe says he can make Full Recs hit and he is your friend-then Full Recs it is!!! If Wax is your neighbor, then Novis it is! If you are friends with the Gomez brothers, then BlackJacks it is!

Yeah I would agree with that

48s work great on a 701 but they arent doing anything a set of 44s or 46s wont do on a 701 properly tuned,it just so happens sport spec are all old x mod racers that have 48s coming out there wazoos. If you had a stock set of 44s and a aftermarket set of 48s on the bench what would you run?

Wrong again, tried both 46s and 48s, 48s made more power. But, as mentioned over and over, you have to know how to get that power to the water. It wasn't a huge difference, but it was a difference. I run a 62T cylinder and even with those 'oversized' 48s, it still hits harder than any 61x unported cylinder with smaller carbs.

But, this is just my experience with our set ups. If you don't like it, I am not going to try and change anyone's mind. Run what you like, right or wrong, it only matters to the owner of the ski.

what 46s and 48s did you compare? Id be surprised to see that small a cc motor need more than 92 mill of intake to get its max rpm.So then where does it stop? 50 mill get ya a little more? It wouldnt really matter to a freestyle ski to get 20 or 30 more rpm anyway.

46 Red tops, 46 Full Specs and 48 Novis. the 48s were worth 100 rpm with one chamber and almost 200 rpm with another. But, even more important than the RPM was the throttle response.

I keep seeing this argument over and over. The thing is when free/riders make an all inclusive statement "that doesn't work" then the racers (who have spent much time learning, testing, tuning) will throw back their conclusions. The truth is most racers are much more experienced at tuning because that’s what we do, we try a setup/part, compare it to our competition and do it again, (we always need more). Freeriders only need what a racer would call "good enough" because they want to ride where as racers although we'll complain about it, love to tinker. So is a 48 to big? NO. It can be tuned by a knowledgeable skilled person to hit as hard as anything and then pull to the top. Does a freerider need that little extra? NO. So the answer a skilled and knowledgeable tuner (not a keyboard tuner) would give is yes it works and well, but overkill for most freeriders. I think that you freeriders should go to a race and if given the chance feel what good race boats feel like and racers should go to the surf and realize what is really needed in the surf. There are always exceptions, I know Graig (Zimmy) would love Scottie's Judge sport mod motor in his surf blaster and could probly ride it (and launch too high) but most would just hurt themselves. You have to think of it in task specific or what works for this.

best throttle response I have ever felt was one of Bill Haig's open SXR's several years back. I was just thinking, man if I could put this SXR motor in my SJ!

That's because Bill knows how to tune and doesn't dismiss something if he can't just bolt it on and go.

Besides Harrison, you know race boats don't have bottom end anyway!

Scottie

Ps
u coming to colonial beach? Only 50 mnutes from my place, we need together together and have some fun. Let u try out the 1100.

Yup well said
Actually i believe that free-riders aren't even after lots of power
they are after the ultimate in throttle response with a decent amount of power.
I just sold my 8mm lamey as its not needed in the surf in fact i think its almost to much and gets un controllable so i am going back to my mega ported 701 with b-pipe and 48 novis

Free-riders in my experience want to be able to pull on half throttle on the face of a wave and have good power , racers want to pull on full throttle at the start line
