@mxmark4 I have a buddy who can get me a magnesium lower for ~$75, so I figure why not.

I'm eyeballing a Sabre Defense mid length upper kit... But I kinda wanted to build something instead of just plunking down $700-800 and sticking a upper on a lower. Plus, if I buy the parts $100 here, $200 there, it doesn't raise suspicion with the boss lol...

I wanted a light weight pencil barrel upper to go for the full 'light weight' theme but the place I'm looking is out.

Well for 75 dollars thats not a bad price .my ar is heavy barrel standard hand guard and I think its weighted just about perfect. Are you doing something like 3 gun where a lighter gun might help or is lightweight just the theme like a ski?

Anyone have any experience with the Beretta Cougar in either 9mm (8000), or .40 (8040)? Reviews seem great but I haven't been able to put my hands on one yet. It's gonna be a compact stash gun for either the truck or tool box.

From your other posts I can see that you like the Beretta lineup, very competent pistols. That being said have you looked at the CZ P-01 or PCR? Most shooters prefer the CZ's to the comparable Beretta. Might fit the slot you are looking to fill. Good luck.

It's true, I'm happy with the Berettas but I was happy with my Ruger at first too. Now I can't wait to replace it with something that has an alloy frame instead of plastic. I'm sure I'll move on to something even better yet once I experience it but for now..it's Beretta. No different than starting out on a SN, getting an SXR, then a RN and then a Matrix. It's all an evolution of experience and taste. :)

I've looked at a couple of CZ's but haven't had a chance to handle or fire one yet. The reviews are great and they have most of the same features that I like about the Beretta like the decocker. What kinds of things do most people prefer about the CZ's?

The P-01 seems to have everything I'm looking for only it's $200 more, (new ones anyways) than the cougars I've been looking at. The way you worded it, I was expecting it to be a cheaper alternative. I don't think I would complain if I owned either.

Go to a competition and you'll probably get an answer about why a CZ. As far as price, well a carbon hull is more than a glass hull. Not sure how you handle your firearms but I am intentionally rough with mine to make sure they are safe and reliable. CZ I throw on the ground, rocks, against a fence (ask Piratelife) without issue. Pulled it from a holster (after a failed rifle reload) completely covered in mud from dragging on the ground in a Serpa and pulled the trigger, bang. They just feel natural to most people and are well built. The P-01 and SP-01 have a lot of wins in all classes of competitive shooting (like STI). If you are price over performance motivated then maybe its not for you, just thought I'd bring it up. Not trying to be a fanboy, they just work.

I always appreciate your input but when you describe how you use a gun, and I think about how I use one...I start to think we are not even on the same planet.

You're all like...

FWIW OCD, There are a lot of 'knock off' CZ style guns out there.

Some are meh, some are awesome.
I have a 'meh' version and it still operates well, no issues, feels great. Polymer frame though. But for the $, I can't complain. Great truck gun.

That's how I got into the Beretta's in the first place. A buddy sold me an ATI C92 which is a Beretta Centurion knock off. It was built on Beretta tooling in Turkey and is every bit the quality as Beretta but sold new for $350. The CZ's I have come across look almost identical so I figure there has to be some of the same history going on.

My buddy keeps bugging me to sell it back to him so I wanted to replace it with a real Beretta first which I have now done. In the meantime, I came across the Beretta Cougar and figured it would be a good replacement for my Ruger SR9c.

Pickednup two new guns this week. Another ak 47 built from the ground up and a marlin 22 mag rifle. No new handguns here of late. Havent been shooting anything either. guess its ski time until deer squirrel and dove season starts.
