It looks ugly and fragmented, but it is very solid and very light.
I am confident it will hold up.

Hey Matt, where did you get that thick foam like that? All I've seen is the thinner stuff. I'm planning to do the same thing for a square I'm working on. :)

Lookin good Matt. I'm goin the same route with the foam, although I picked up 12x12x18" blocks from Tractor Supply Company and cut them into pieces to fit. Same concept though.

I can tell you that the same volume of two part foam would be at least 3x's heavier than what the poly is.

i know... i picked up 6 of the blocks (12" x 12" x 18") and only used 1.5 of them to fill the entire rear of the ski. It's even lighter than I expexted.

4 years and holding strong on my ski, the drain plugs also work great I open them up from time to time and drain her out.

I also did Katie's ski last year.

Do they sell them like that, or were you just getting some material from their boxes?

They sell them like that. It's building insulation.

Now that I am almost done with it, I am excited about it. Light, non-absorbent, strong, drainable.

Yep you will like it, I remember about a year after I did it I opened the plugs and out came a cup of water. I have always preached for people to do this but they don't and its no extra work really and worth its weight in gold. IMO

No matter how well you seal that ski up it will eventually spring a leak over the years.

Mark, if I recall correctly you are using some brass fittings rather than drain plugs? How do they work compared to the plugs like Matt used? And did you epoxy them in from the inside?

Thanks...

I epoxy a piece of 101 nylon on the inside of the hull and drilled and tapped through the hull and nylon with a ¼” NPT.

I did not have enough room under the scupper or exhaust flange for that type of drain.

I am using plastic boat drainplugs that are screwed into the hull. I also sealed/glued them with Bostik adhesive.

Glassing the all the tray pieces together apart from the hull didn't turn out to be such a good idea, as things didn't line up right.
So, I had to cut the footholds back off the tray pieces, and the sides as well.
I poured foam in the sides, up front, then sanded that down to have a smooth surface for glassing over.
I put down a sheet of glass, then the flat tray piece, and then more carbon/kevlar on top (several layers).
The weights are on it to keep the springy tray pieces in place where I want them.
Looks ugly, but functional.
As you can clearly see, I am probably the person with the worst glass skills on this site. Looks awful, as usual.
But, it will be strong and functional.
And in the end, turf will cover it, so it's all good.

U made alot of sanding for your self...u need to paint the resin on the carbon and the ski, then tap out air and make the resin rise through the carbon (like concrete work).i was hopeing to see u cut the hull down 2-3 in change ur mind?

The hull is cut 2 inches.
I laid the fabric exactly as you described.
What makes you think differently?

i didnt,u said ur not the best at glass work so wanted to make sure u had the steps right, looks like u were haveing problems getting the carbon to lay down properly.didnt look like u cut the hull shorter in those pics my bad.....

Gotcha. I miscommunicated - I know the proper steps for a solid layup, and the carbon/kevlar is laying down just fine where I want it.
It just doesn't look nice.
So to clarify....I can make a good & solid layup, but it's ugly.

And yes, the back end is cut just about exactly 2 inches.
